PHOENIX - Despite a tie game in the sixth inning, the Diamond 'Dogs stumbled late falling 9-4 at No. 10 Arizona State on Saturday evening at Phoenix Municipal Stadium.
Fresno State (8-6) collected eight hits against Arizona State (12-4) pitching for a second straight game spreading the hits between eight 'Dogs.
Junior catcher Zach Presno smacked his team-leading seventh home run of the season, drew a walk and scored two of the 'Dogs four runs.
Redshirt freshman first baseman Ivan Luna and sophomore shortstop Jeff Jamison each tallied a hit and scored a run while sophomore third baseman Ryan Higgins laced his first career triple.
On the mound, junior right-hander Jamison Hill suffered his first loss tossing 5.1 innings allowing six hits, six runs, five earned, four walks while striking out four.
Four relievers came in after Hill with each only allowing one hit apiece.
How It Happened
After threatening to score early on Friday, the Bulldogs were able to do that on Saturday as Presno smacked a two-out solo home run in the top of the first inning off Sun Devil starting pitcher Tyler Thornton.
ASU answered back in the bottom of the first with a two-run home run by right fielder Hunter Jump to take a 2-1 lead. The Sun Devils padded their lead to 4-1 with a pair of runs in the third inning off a RBI double by Jump and a single up the middle by third baseman Gage Workman.
With Hill keeping the 'Dogs in the ball game, the offense sparked up again in the fifth with two runs on a two-run RBI single by designated hitter Emilio Nogales. Jamison led off the frame with a single, stole second base and after an intentionally walk to Presno, both player moved up into scoring position for Nogales on a wild pitch as the junior made the Sun Devils pay.
The 'Dogs tied the game up at 4-4 in the top of the sixth on a RBI single to center field by pinch-hitter Jake Gentry, but it was all Arizona State from there as the Sun Devils scored the game's final five runs in the bottom of the sixth and allowed only one more Bulldog to reach base over the final three innings.
A RBI single and fielding error by the 'Dogs allowed the first two Sun Devil runs to score before a pitching change for the 'Dogs brought in right-hander Kevin Larson. Freshman second baseman Nathan Baez greeted Larson with a three-run home run to left field to give ASU a 9-4 advantage.
