Hanna Cavinder scores 1,000th career point.
PROVO, Utah – The Fresno State women's basketball team split its opening week of play after falling 80-64 to BYU on Saturday at the Marriott Center. During the fourth quarter, Hanna Cavinder scored the 1,000th point of her career
Like the Bulldogs (1-1), it was also the Cougars' second game of the year (2-0) after they reached the second round of the 2021 NCAA Tournament, losing to eventual runner-up Arizona.
Hanna led the Bulldogs in scoring with 14 points. Amiee Book (13) and Wytalla Motta (10) joined her in double figures. Haley Cavinder pulled down a team-high eight rebounds dished out 10 assists.
How It Happened
Fresno State opened with a 7-4 lead but a 9-0 BYU run forced the Bulldogs to call a timeout after three turnovers led to seven points. Late in the period, a pair of 3-pointers from Book, with an and-1 from Imani Lacy sandwiched in between, got the 'Dogs back within one at 17-16 with just over a minute to play in the period.
Shaylee Gonzales and Lauren Gustin helped the Cougars build up a 12-point lead late in the second, the Cougars' largest of the half but free throws from Daylee Dunn and Wytalla Motta brought the deficit back into single digits shortly before the break. A charge taken by Motta at the other end half kept score at 37-29.
Fresno State got it back to six in to open the third through a Maria Guimaraes layup. A 3-pointer from Paisley Harding, followed, her first of three during four-minute stretch in which the 'Dogs were outscored 16-6. The Bulldogs responded with six unanswered of their own to pull the score back to 53-43. BYU scored eight of the final nine points to take a 17-point lead after three (61-44).
The Bulldogs got the deficit down to as much 14 with fives minutes to play but back-to-back 3-pointers from Tegan Graham and Harding started an 8-0 spurt. Fresno State closed the night scoring the game's final six points.
