FRESNO, Calif. - The Diamond 'Dogs had their first home Mountain West action on Saturday splitting a doubleheader against New Mexico at Pete Beiden Field at Bob Bennett Stadium.
The 'Dogs were victorious in game one, 5-2 before falling in game two, 1-0 in 10 innings in a pitcher's duel.
Fresno State (4-5, 2-3 MW) got back-to-back great starting pitching performances from senior right-hander Jamison Hill and sophomore left-hander Jake Dixon.
Hill went six strong innings allowing seven hits, two earned runs, one walk while striking out two to earn his second win of the season. Dixon followed with a career-high 6.2 innings limiting New Mexico (5-7, 4-4 MW) to six hits, no runs, one walk and struck out five.
Offensively, the 'Dogs collected five hits in game one getting a pair of doubles from Ivan Luna and Vinny Bologna as the Oklahoma transfer had a bases-clearing double in the the bottom of the fifth inning (watch).
The second game saw the 'Dogs held to three hits as they were unable to get a hit until the eighth inning as Lobos senior pitcher Justin Armbruester went 9.0 innings allowing two hits, one walk and struck out 17.
How It Happened
With the Lobos jumping out to a quick 2-0 lead in game one getting four hits off Hill early, the 'Dogs cut their lead in half in the bottom of the third thanks to a pair of misplays by New Mexico allowing Ryan Higgins to score.
The 'Dogs took a 4-2 lead in the fifth on Bologna's bases-clearing double, his third of the season, as all three 'Dogs who scored reached base on walks.
The final run of the contest came in the eighth on an RBI double by Luna to right field to put the Bulldogs up 5-2 and Carvajal got the final four outs of the game for his second save of the season.
After Emilio Nogales broke up the no-hit bid by Armbruester in the eighth, the 'Dogs could not advance a runner past second in the eighth or ninth as the game went to extra innings scoreless.
With the Mountain West using the international tie-breaking rules this season, Connor Mang was placed at second base for Chambers who smacked a double to right-center off Carvajal to score the game's lone run as the 'Dogs could not push a run across in the bottom of the inning.

The second game was a pitcher's duel between Armbruester and Dixon as neither allowed the opposing teams to do much offensively. The Lobos got their first crack at the scoreboard in the seventh inning loading the bases for relief pitcher Robbie Peters who got Mack Chambers to fly out to left to keep the game scoreless.Carvajal calls game!
