'Dogs drop pair at Nevada
3/20/2021 9:30:00 PM | Baseball
Fresno State (5-8, 3-5 MW) fell 7-6 in game one and 20-10 in eight innings in a high-scoring game two.
The Bulldogs had plenty of offense in the two games combining for 22 hits with nine extra-base hits. Redshirt sophomore catcher Zach Morgan matched his single-game career high with three hits while adding an RBI in game one and came off the bench to score a run and draw two walks in game two.
Sophomore infielder Andrew Kachel had a pair of doubles, scored two runs and drew a walk in game one and added a solo home run, three RBIs and scored a run in game two.
Senior infielder Josh Lauck hit his first career home run as a Bulldog in the sixth inning of game two smacking a grand slam to help the 'Dogs mount a six-run frame to storm back in the contest.
On the mound, senior right-hander Jamison Hill started game one tossing 6.2 innings before giving way to junior Kyle Pruhsmeier for the final 1.1 innings. Game two saw six 'Dogs take the mound with senior Oscar Carvajal making his first start of the season.
How It Happened
The Bulldogs got off to a strong start in game one taking a 5-2 lead after four-and-half innings scoring three runs in the fourth inning picking up its first two runs on an RBI double to left-center and added a sacrifice fly by Lauck. The 'Dogs added two more runs in the fifth on a sacrifice fly by Nate Thimjon and an RBI single to right field by Morgan.
The Wolf Pack responded with a solo home run, but the Bulldogs quickly answered back in the top of the sixth with an RBI triple to right-center by Dylan Johnson that gave the 'Dogs back a three-run lead.
Unfortunately, it was all Nevada from there as they tied the game at 6-6 in the bottom of the seventh with three runs. The Wolf Pack put together six hits in the inning and scored the eventual game-winning run on a two-out double to left field by Marco Valenzuela in the eighth inning.
If you like offense, game two was right up your alley as the 'Dogs got to work right away in the first inning on a two-run RBI single by Kachel. Nevada answered back with three runs. An RBI single to left by Ryan Higgins in the second tied the game at 3-3, but Nevada reeled off 11 unanswered runs scoring one in the second, five in the third and five more in the fourth to take a 14-3 lead.
The Bulldogs refused to go away clawing back with a solo home run by Kachel in the fifth before exploding for a six-run sixth that brought the 'Dogs within 14-10Â as the scoring was capped by Lauck's grand slam.
The Wolf Pack scored the final six runs of the game scoring two in the sixth, three in the seventh and one in the eighth as they took a 10-run lead with no outs in the frame to invoke the ten-run rule and end the game.
