Fresno State opens 2021 season against San Jose State

The Fresno State soccer team will take the field for the first time in 485 days, kicking off its 2021 campaign on the road against Mountain West-foe San Jose State on Saturday afternoon.
The contest between the Spartans and Bulldogs is slated for 4:00 p.m. PT. Due to restrictions set in place by Santa Clara County, fans will not be allowed to attend in-person. The match will be streamed live on the Mountain West Network.
"We are excited to be back competing," head coach Brian Zwashcka said, "our players are ready for the opportunity in front of them. Our conference is always competitive, and we are ready to prove that we have what it takes to finish at the top of the conference. We have a good mix of veterans and new talent on our roster, and I'm excited to see what we can do in a game."

BULLDOG BITES:
- Â Fresno State was picked to finish fourth in the MW preseason poll.
-  Fresno State brings back All-Mountain West Second Team selection Ele Avery along with 15 additional returners. The Bulldogs also revamped their roster with 10 newcomers.
- Bulldogs return two of their top scorers from the 2019 season in Avery and Emma Chivers who combined for nine goals.
- In goal, the Bulldogs return Valentina Vivas who played in 14 games and logged 22 saves.
- The Bulldogs finished the 2019 season with an overall record of 9-7-4 (5-4-2), advancing to the postseason conference tournament for the third consecutive season. Fresno State's season came to a close when the 'Dogs fell to No. 2 San Diego State in the semifinals, 3-2.
- Fresno State has not bested San Jose State since the 2016 season.
SCOUTING THE SPARTANS:
- SJSU was tabbed to finish fifth in the MW preseason poll.
- SJSU returns two All-MW selections in Sabrina Weinman and Karlee Pottorff.
- The Spartans finished the 2019 season 7-9-4 after making their fifth-straight Mountain West Championship Tournament, the only school in the conference to do so.
- SJSU has won three out of the last four meetings between the teams.
