SAN DIEGO - The Diamond 'Dogs opened Mountain West play on Saturday with a split against San Diego State at Tony Gwynn Stadium.
Fresno State (3-3, 1-1 MW) won a hard-fought contest, 3-2 in the first game before falling 17-0 in seven innings in game two.
The Bulldogs were held to six hits in the first game with senior Zach Presno tallying a pair smacking a home run, his third of the season, drove in two RBIs and drew a walk.
Sophomore Andrew Kachel added two singles while Matt Ottino and Zach Morgan each had a hit.
On the mound, senior Jamison Hill went 5.1 innings before giving way to southpaw Robbie Peters who came on in relief in the sixth and earned his first career win.
Seniors Nik Cardinal and Oscar Carvajal combined to toss the final three innings with Carvajal getting the final four outs to convert his first save of the season.
Game two saw the 'Dogs held to four hits while using four pitchers as freshmen Will Springer, Ixan Henderson and Treven Crowley each made their Bulldog debuts.
How It Happened
After a great defensive play saved a run in the bottom of the third (watch), the Bulldogs broke through on the scoreboard in the fourth inning with Presno's solo blast.
SDSU got one run back in the eighth on an RBI single by Jaden Fein, but Carvajal was able to work around two runners on, no-out situation in the ninth to get a double play and foul out to close out the 'Dogs first MW victory.
