'Dogs drop series finale vs. Falcons
4/11/2021 6:00:00 PM | Baseball
Fresno State (9-15, 6-9 MW), who took the series with a pair of wins on Saturday, collected six runs and nine hits in the game, but were countered by 12 runs and 17 hits by Air Force.
Vinny Bologna matched his season-high with three hits going for a pair of singles and a double while scoring a run.
Zach Morgan blasted his first career home run going deep for a three-run shot in the fourth.
On the mound, six 'Dogs saw action with right-hander Nik Cardinal making his fourth start of the season tossing four innings allowing three runs, two earned and struck out three.
Five relievers followed with freshman Tommy Hopfe throwing two shutout innings in the eighth and ninth in his second career appearance.
How It Happened
Air Force (13-11, 7-8 MW) took an early 3-0 lead with two runs in the second and one more in the fourth on RBI base knocks, but the 'Dogs answered back with five runs in the bottom of the fourth to take a 5-3 lead.
Bologna got the inning started with a double down the left field line coming around to score on a throwing error by Falcons starting pitcher Stevan Fairburn Jr. on a sacrifice bunt by Zach Presno. A hit by pitch to Nate Thimjon put a pair of runners on base for Morgan who smacked a home run to left field to give the 'Dogs a one-run lead.
Jeff Jamison added the 'Dogs final run of the frame getting on base via a walk, moved to third on a failed pickoff attempt and came home to score on a sacrifice bunt by EJ Andrews, Jr.Â
Air Force responded with five runs of their own in the top of the fifth, but the Bulldogs were able to get one run back in the bottom of the fifth on an RBI groundout by Thimjon.
A run in the top of the sixth on a ground-rule double gave Air Force back a three-run lead at 9-6, but the 'Dogs looked like they were threatening to tie the game in the bottom of the frame loading the bases with one out after back-to-back walks by Andrews, Jr. and Ryan Higgins.
After a pitching change by the Falcons brought designated hitter Paul Skenes in to pitch, the freshman right-hander retired the next two 'Dogs to keep the 'Dogs at a three-run deficit.
Three more runs in the seventh by the Falcons rounded out the scoring for the day to give Air Force its final margin of 12-6.Â
