Diamond 'Dogs split pair vs. Aztecs
4/17/2021 10:15:00 PM | Baseball
A week after winning his 600th game at Fresno State, head coach Mike Batesole made more history on Saturday earning his 602nd victory at Fresno State with a win in game two to move past the legendary Pete Beiden for second in program history in wins at Fresno State.
Fresno State (10-17, 7-10 MW) scored a combined 16 runs in the two games platting 11 in game one and five more in game two and totaled 17 hits picking up 10 in the opener and seven more in the nightcap.
Three 'Dogs had multi-hit games in game one and Dylan Johnson hit his first career home run (watch) before game two saw Zach Morgan match his career high with three hits and he scored a run.
Sophomore infielder Blake Wink also hit his first career home run (watch) with a two-run shot in game two and scored two runs.
On the mound, San Diego native Jamison Hill made the start in game one tossing 4.2 innings allowing eight hits, five earned runs and struck out two. He gave way to relievers Kyle Pruhsmeier, Alex Kendrick, Ixan Henderson and Nik Cardinal.
Game two saw left-hander Jake Dixon, the reigning Mountain West pitcher of the week, pick up his fourth win of the season going seven strong innings limiting SDSU to six hits, three runs, two earned, one walk and struck out four.
Kevin Larson escaped a jam in the eighth to work one inning and Cooper Bergman earned his first career save working around two hits in the ninth.
How It Happened
Game one saw plenty of offense with the teams combining to score 23 runs and slug out 25 hits in the contest. After the Aztecs took a quick 1-0 lead in the top of the first, Johnson's two-run home run in the second and an RBI single by Andrew Kachel in the third (watch) gave the 'Dogs a 3-1 lead.
A four-run fourth put SDSU ahead 5-3, but the 'Dogs tied the game at 5-5 through six innings with a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth on a Kachel RBI triple (watch) and a sacrifice fly by Vinny Bologna (watch).
The 'Dogs exploded for four more runs in the seventh with an RBI single by Ryan Higgins (watch), an RBI groundout by pinch-hitter Ivan Luna (watch) and a two-run RBI single to right-center by Zach Presno (watch).
With the Bulldogs holding onto a 9-5 lead, the Aztecs responded with a seven-run eighth inning using a three-run home run from pinch-hitter Poncho Ruiz and a pair of two-run RBI singles to surge ahead 12-9.
The 'Dogs made one final push in the bottom of the ninth scoring a pair of runs on an RBI triple from Luna (watch) and a sacrifice fly by Presno to cut the SDSU lead to one at 12-11, but a strikeout ended the comeback efforts.
The nightcap saw each team belt two-run home runs in the second inning and each score a pair of runs in the fifth as EJ Andrews, Jr. clutch two-out RBI double (watch) to left drove in Wink to tie the game at 3-3.
Johnson knocked in the eventual game-winning RBI in the sixth with single to left-center (watch) to drive in Presno and the 'Dogs added an insurance run in the seventh as Andrews, Jr. came home to score on a wild pitch (watch).
With the 'Dogs holding a 5-3 lead after seven innings, Larson got two quick outs in the eight before the Aztecs loaded the bases, but the Bakersfield native got Mike Jarvis to groundout to third to end the threat.Â
Much like Larson, Bergman was also able to get two quick outs in the ninth before the Aztecs notched a single and double to bring up the go-ahead run, but the redshirt freshman got Jacob Cruce to fly out to center to seal the win.
