FRESNO, Calif. – In a highly-charged, physical match, Fresno State's lone shot on target against Nevada on Sunday proved to be the difference in the Bulldogs giving Head Coach Brian Zwaschka his 100th career win. The 'Dogs earned their first conference win with a 1-0 defeat of the Wolf Pack, a team coming off its first MW win this season on Thursday.
How It Happened
Tensions bubbled up in the opening minutes of the match as a heavy touch in the Bulldogs' box led to a slide tackle into the body of Fresno State keeper Valentina Vivas by Emily Rich. Ten minutes later, Vivas came out of her box to meet Rich with a slide of her own.
The Bulldogs nearly broke the deadlock in the 28th minute. Megan Galvan got a step on her defender but with her marker driving her to the left away from goal, her attempt across the face of goal trickled wide after getting by the Pack's keeper.
Nevada returned fire in the in the 39th. Olivia Koop got a clean look outside the 18 and struck a ball that drifted away from Vivas, forcing her to make a fingertip stop before the ball found the left post.
Deadlocked through a hour-plus, Sam Tristan pulled down a loose ball at midfield and spun off defender in the 65th minute. She found Kassandra Ceja in the center channel who went one-touch into the path of Kaelyn Miller at the top of the box. A cut back to right across her defender, the sophomore hit a right-footed shot toward the far post past Kendal Stovall for the go-ahead goal.
Nevada continued to push for an equalizer but all three attempts during the final 25 minutes were off the mark.
