ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - Sophomore second baseman Ben Newton tied a single-game program record on Saturday afternoon as the Diamond 'Dogs topped New Mexico, 12-3 at Santa Ana Star Field.

Finishing a perfect 6-for-6, the Albany, Calif. native tallied five singles, a double, drove in three RBI and scored a run as Fresno State (7-8, 1-1 MW) went for a season-high 19 hits as a team.

In addition to Newton's six base knocks, all nine starters had at least one hit with Zach Morgan and Andrew Kachel each notching three hits apiece and Ivan Luna smacked a two-run home run.

Sophomore southpaw Ixan Henderson earned his third of the season tossing five innings fanning eight while limiting the Lobos to two runs, one earned and two walks.

Cooper Bergman finished out the game for the 'Dogs on the mound throwing the final four innings to convert his first save of the season.

How It Happened
With the Lobos scoring first for the second straight game, UNM brang across two runs in the first taking advantage of a Bulldog fielding error and added a two-out single back up the middle by third baseman Willie Cano.

The 'Dogs responded with three runs in the top of the second collecting five hits, all singles, in the frame getting an RBI single from Mason Grotto and a batter later, Bobby Blandford delivered a two-run RBI single through the right side for a 3-2 lead.

Two more runs came across in the fourth for the 'Dogs scoring on a two-out RBI double down the right field line by Newton and Morgan knocked him home with a single to right-center.

The Bulldogs broke open the game with a five-run seventh inning picking up RBI base hits from Kachel, Payton Allen and Newton and added a two-run home run by Luna in the eighth to extend their lead to ten.

A run in the ninth by the Lobos completed the scoring for the 'Dogs first Mountain West victory.

Notables

Newton becomes the sixth Bulldog in program history with six hits in a game as Tom Creighton and Oscar Lopez each did it in the same game on Feb. 10, 2001 against Santa Clara.
Bergman earned his third career save.
