'Dogs win opener over Aztecs, 3-1

SAN DIEGO - Behind a dominant pitching performance from Ixan Henderson and timely hitting, the Bulldogs topped San Diego, 3-1 in the series opener on Friday evening at Tony Gwynn Stadium.

Fresno State (10-12, 4-3 MW) was held to six hits in the contest, but getting six strong innings from Henderson where he allowed only two hits and one run proved to be enough for the Bulldogs to earn the victory.

Zach Morgan, the Mountain West leader in batting average, tallied a two-hit performance, scored a run, drove in an RBI, drew two walks and stole a base.

The trio of Cooper Bergman, Robbie Peters and Trevor Garcia each tossed one inning apiece to close out the game with Garcia earning his first career save.

How It Happened
The 'Dogs jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead in the first inning with a clutch two-out RBI double by Ivan Luna.

The Bulldogs padded their lead in the third on a base knock back up the middle by Morgan that drove home Ben Newton who led off the inning with a walk.

The Aztecs cut the 'Dogs lead in half in the fifth scoring their lone run of the contest, an unearned run after a throwing error from Travis Welker at shortstop.

The 'Dogs answered right back with a solo home run from Vinny Bologna in the sixth, his second of the season, to go up 3-1.

Looking to pad their lead with some insurance runs in the ninth, the 'Dogs loaded the bases with one out, but were unable to add to the lead. After a leadoff single by Xavier Carter, Garcia struck out the final three Aztecs he faced to hold on for the win.
