'Dogs come up short against Tigers

FRESNO, Calif. - A back-and-forth contest went the way of Pacific on Tuesday evening as the Diamond 'Dogs fell 8-7 to the Tigers at Pete Beiden Field at Bob Bennett Stadium.

Fresno State (13-15) took a 6-4 lead into the eighth inning, but four late runs for Pacific proved to be too much to overcome.

Led by a pair of home runs by Ivan Luna, his fifth and sixth of the season, the Oceanside native added a double and drove in a career-best four RBIs.

Zach Morgan, Tommy Hopfe and Josh Lauck all tallied two hits apiece with Lauck coming off the bench in the sixth inning to take over in center field and would go on to deliver a go-ahead three-run home run in the seventh.

On the mound, the Bulldogs used six pitchers with Zach Statzer making his first start of the season tossing four innings and striking out four before giving way to Kyle Pruhsmeier, Hopfe, Trevor Garcia, Robbie Peters and Cooper Bergman.

How It Happened
Pacific jumped out to a 4-0 lead with a pair of runs in the third and two more in the fourth on a two-run home run by Ben Nemivant.

The 'Dogs quickly stormed back with six unanswered runs getting a pair on Luna's first round tripper, a two-run shot to right-center, in the sixth and tacked on four more in the seventh. Lauck's three-run bomb down the left field line pushed the 'Dogs in front, 5-4 and the Bulldogs added another run on an RBI double by Luna.

The Tigers responded tying the game at 6-6 in the eighth with back-to-back RBI singles and took a 8-6 lead after what would have been the third out of the top of the ninth was dropped in center by Lauck allowing a pair of runs to score.

Luna was able to get one run back in the bottom of the ninth with a solo homer to right field, but a groundout to second ended the game.
