BOISE, Idaho – Down two goals and playing nearly an hour with only 10 players at Boise State, Fresno State attempted to climb an uphill battle in the second but ultimately fell 2-1 on Sunday afternoon at Boas Soccer Complex.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Boise State took advantage of its fourth shot of the afternoon in the 17th minute. Carly Cross got space on the left side of the box and lifted the ball toward the opposite corner past Valentina Vivas.
Eight minutes later, Fresno State nearly leveled the match. Averee Campos sent a free kick into the box that Jordan Lau was able to get a foot on and flick up toward the back post but it was knocked away by Bronco goalkeeper Genevieve Crenshaw.
The Broncos doubled their lead in the 28th minute. A short corner played to Kenzie MacMillan at the top of the box turned into a shot to the near post to put Boise State up 2-0. Five minutes later, things got more difficult for the 'Dogs as they went down a player as Haley Espinoza was shown a straight red for retaliating after a late challenge from Boise State's Sophie Drown.
With Boise State putting up all five shots in the early going of the second half, Vivas kept the Bulldogs in the game with three saves. Then came the breakthrough. In the 64th minute, Kaelyn Miller chipped a shot up and out of the reach of a diving Crenshaw to cut the deficit in half.
Three more attempts came from the 'Dogs in the ensuing five minutes as they pushed for the equalizer but it didn't come.
