Bulldogs sweep Rebels out of Fresno

FRESNO, Calif. – The Fresno State baseball team brought out the brooms Sunday afternoon as it secured a season sweep over the Hustlin' Rebels by defeating UNLV 8-5 at Pete Beiden Field at Bob Bennett Stadium.

The Bulldogs have a firm grasp on fourth place in the Mountain West standings as they advance to 27-24 on the season (16-14 MW) and the Rebels fall to 19-29 (10-17 MW).

NOTES:

Tommy Hopfe recorded his 10th save of 2023 and added two strikeouts to his resume.
Hopfe also went four-for-five at the plate with four RBI and two runs scored.
This is the first Bulldog season sweep over UNLV since 2015 when Fresno State won all seven games against the Rebels, including the opening round of the Mountain West Championship that year.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
The Rebels were the first on the board with an RBI single in the top of the first, but the Bulldogs quickly snatched the lead in the bottom half of the frame with an RBI single from Tommy Hopfe and RBI double from Marco Pirruccello.

Hopfe doubled in the bottom of the third to tack on two more runs for Fresno State.

The Rebels added a pair of runs to tie the game with a home run and fielder's choice in the fourth and fifth innings, but the Bulldogs quickly reclaimed the lead with a fielder's choice to score Murf Gray.

UNLV took another swing at tying the game with a sacrifice fly in the seventh, but Tommy Hopfe crushed a solo shot to right field, followed by a Murf Gray single in the eighth to seal the 8-5 victory for the Diamond 'Dogs.

UP NEXT: Fresno State is headed back to San Luis Obispo for the third matchup against Cal Poly this year with first pitch scheduled for Tuesday at 6:05 p.m. PT.
