BOISE, Idaho – Fresno State handed Boise State its first home conference loss since 2022 with a 30-7 win on The Blue on Saturday. The Bulldogs earned their largest margin of victory in the series with Boise State since 1996, and its largest margin of victory in Boise ever. The win for the Bulldogs snapped Boise State's 16-game home winning streak, an active streak that led the country.
Fresno State keeps possession of the Milk Can trophy. With the win, the Bulldogs earned bowl eligibility for the fifth consecutive season.
The Bulldogs held Boise State to its fewest offensive yards of the season (193) while forcing three turnovers. Offensively, Fresno State did not turn the ball over and was paced by 189 yards rushing for its most rushing yards in a conference game this season.
How it happened
Fresno State won the toss and elected to defer to the second half. With the Bulldog defense taking the field first, it forced a three-and-out right out of the gate. Fresno State's offense went three-and-out on its first chance. Boise State started its next drive with three consecutive false starts, putting them into a first-and-30 situation. Simeon Harris came up with a big tackle for loss to make it second-and-34, and Jakari Embry got the third down stop with a tackle on Malik Sherrod two plays later to bring out the punt team.
Jordan Malau'ulu fielded the punt at midfield, and after a second down completion to Josiah Freeman to make it second-and-one, Brandon Ramirez gave Fresno State the first first down of the afternoon. After a false start on Fresno State, Boise State was called for a roughing the passer penalty that resulted in a first down for the Bulldogs. The running back trio of Bryson Donelson, Rayshon Luke and Elijah Gilliam moved the 'Dogs down field and Gilliam punched it in from one yard out to give Fresno State a 7-0 lead.
With Boise State moving into Fresno State territory, Michael Jordan Jr. batted down a pass at the line of scrimmage on third down to bring out the field goal unit for the Broncos. Going for the 45-yard attempt, the kick was blocked by Jahzon Jacks to keep the Broncos off the board.
The first Bronco score came with 2:07 left in the first half as they took 12 plays to go 50 yards to tie the game. After going three and out, the Bulldog defense got its first turnover of the game with a tip-drill interception by Simeon Harris to give Fresno State the ball back with 1:28 left before halftime. Fresno State was able to cash in for points with a 36-yard field goal by Dylan Lynch to end the half with a 10-7 lead.
The Bulldogs did nothing with their first drive, but the defense came through again as Harris hit Max Cutforth for a strip sack and a fumble recovered by Jacks. Fresno State's offense saw powerful running from Ramirez. After a 15 yard gain by the sophomore, he took it himself on the next play and punched it in from three-yards out to extend the lead.
Fresno State led 17-7 with 10:47 left in the third quarter. Not long after the score, the Bulldogs got the ball back after a wide open interception by linebacker Tytus Khajavi. Fresno State took over at the Boise State 47-yard line. A Bulldog delay of game stalled the chances, and the punt team came out with no points off the turnover. With the punt downed at the 17-yard line, the defense had three-straight plays for a loss to force Boise to punt from their own 13-yard line.
The Bulldogs capitalized on the opportunity and the short field. Beginning the drive at the Boise State 43 yard line, it took just four plays to find the end zone. After a Boise State unsportsmanlike conduct penalty, Fresno State saw a big run from Luke for 23 yards to the 2-yard line. Donelson punched it in to put the 'Dogs up 24-7.
Lynch converted a field goal from 43 yards out to extend the Bulldog lead to 27-7 with 10:36 remaining.
Finn Claypool came up with a big play with a sack for a loss of 17 yards. The Bronco quarterback fumbled on the play, but the home team recovered. The Bulldog defense held the pressure, and the Broncos would punt again.
Boise State put together a long drive but Claypool picked up another sack to put them behind schedule at third-and-23. The Broncos went for it on fourth down, but surrendered a turnover on downs with 4:06 on the clock.
Fresno State's offense tacked on three more points after a 33-yard field goal from Lynch.
