FORT COLLINS, Colo. - Fresno State went toe-to-toe with Colorado State but a late push came up just short as the Bulldogs fell in a tightly contested matchup at Moby Arena on Saturday afternoon, 86-83.
Fresno State put forth a strong offensive showing that featured four 'Dogs in double figures, 50% shooting from the field (32-64) and an impressive 71% from the three-point arc (10-14). Avery Watkins played a career high game collecting 25 points and a perfect 5-of-5 from beyond the arc. Watkins was one of four players to finish the day in double-digits joined by Emilia Long, Danae Powell and Ava Marr.Â
How it happenedÂ
Fresno State held an edge over Colorado State to open the game. Colorado State hit the first basket of the day but Avery Watkins responded quickly with a three-pointer on the 'Dogs first possession. Watkins continued her stride with a shot from inside the paint. Emilia Long tacked on another three-pointer of her own for a light lead, 8-4. Following Danae Powell's shot the Rams hit a five-point run to knot it up, 10-10. Colorado State had the upper hand until Ava Marr, Watkins and Long sank in the next set of three's for Fresno State to close the period, 21-19. Fresno State closed the first period on .100 from the three (5-5).Â
Fresno State held strong with the same offensive momentum outscoring the Rams, 21-19 once again. Bulldogs played the better end of a toss up period that had six lead lead changes. Powell held the scoring advantage for the 'Dogs with seven points in the period. It would be another set of triples for Fresno State by Watkins and Powell that put the Bulldogs up at the half, 42-38.Â
Fresno State continued to their largest lead over the Rams to open the second half by Marr with Fresno's ninth three-pointer of the day, 45-38. Ram's were able to work that lead back down with a five point play after a flagrant foul from Diawara. Diawara cut into the Rams scoring run on the next field goal. 'Dogs were held tightly from the field putting up 14 points to Colorado's 31 in the third, 69-56.Â
Fresno State worked down from a 14 point deficit to sit within a possession in the final seconds. Bulldogs played on their highest scoring period of the day, 27-17 with ten points coming from Watkins. The junior guard hit her first 20-piece game on her fifth three-pointer. 'Dogs held the Rams from the field for the final four minutes of the game, allowing them to only grab scoring opportunities from the charity stripe. Bulldogs' were solid for all three of their last shots in the field but three trips to the line for the Rams in the final thirty seconds set them with a three point cushion. A turnover on the inbound for the Bulldogs called the tightly played game in Moby Arena, 86-83.Â
