FRESNO, Calif. — The Fresno State baseball team powered past the Pepperdine Waves with an 11–3 victory on Monday afternoon at Pete Beiden Field at Bob Bennett Stadium.
Fresno State (4-3, 0-0 MW) closed the series with three wins over the Waves (1-6, 0-0 WCC) and wasted no time taking control of the series finale, scoring four runs in the bottom of the first inning and never looking back.
The Bulldogs piled up 12 hits in the game while capitalizing on three Pepperdine errors to secure the win.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Fresno State jumped to an early lead in the bottom of the first. Brady Hewitt and Jett Ruby opened the inning with back-to-back singles before Griffen Sotomayor drew a walk to load the bases. Zach Plasschaert then broke the game open with a grand slam to right field, giving the Bulldogs an immediate four-run advantage.
Fresno State kept the pressure on in the second inning. Barclay Ovalle singled and later moved into scoring position before Hewitt doubled to left center. Ruby followed with another base hit up the middle to drive in two runs and push the lead to 6–0. The Bulldogs added two more in the fourth when Sotomayor singled and later came around during another Fresno State rally that featured traffic on the bases and timely contact.
Pepperdine scored twice in the fifth, but Fresno State answered again in the sixth. Marcus Nolen doubled to center to spark the inning before Austin Young brought a run home on a sacrifice fly. The Bulldogs added insurance in the eighth when Michael Boyd tripled down the line to score a run and Nolen followed with an RBI groundout.
Fresno State finished with 12 hits on the afternoon, with multi-hit games from Hewitt, Ruby and Ovalle while Plasschaert's first-inning grand slam provided the biggest swing of the 11-3 victory for the Diamond 'Dogs.
