Going for gold
Junior Liz Tarczy returns to the Mountain West Championship, looking to defend her high jump title. Tarczy was the 2025 MW Indoor high jump champion, and the 2024 and 2025 MW Outdoor high jump champion. She opened this season with a career-best indoor mark of 1.82m/5-11.5 at the Silver State Invite, in the same venue that the championship is held this weekend. That jump was the second-highest jump in program history.
Tarczy had a Top 5 finish in each meet this season, including one win. She currently sits atop the Mountain West performance list with Ajia Hughes from New Mexico.
One final go
Senior Madison Hutton is set to compete in a handful of events this weekend, as she sees her Bulldog career wind down. Hutton finds herself in the indoor Top 10 in the 60m hurdles (No. 6), the high jump (No. 5), the long jump (No. 5) and the pentathlon (No. 2). After redshirting her indoor season last year, she enters the championship this weekend looking to return to the podium one final time. In 2024, she was the pentathlon champion with 3,982 points, becoming just the second Bulldog to win gold in the event at the indoor championships.
Maria Lawson also will compete in her final championship event as a Bulldog. Lawson has had a great indoor season to this point. She picked up her first career event win, in any season or event. Lawson won the weight throw at the UW Invitational. She has finished in the Top 4 in each indoor event this season. Lawson has had some of her best throws of her career so far this season, taking second in the weight throw at the Silver State Invite and third at the Spokane Sports Showcase before winning the event at the UW Invite.
In Reno for the indoor season opener, the Clovis native had a throw of 18.20m/59-8.5 for a new personal best, and her farthest throw since the 2024 indoor championships. On her third attempt, she surpassed her previous personal best by nearly two inches. Lawson is currently sixth in the Mountain West.
Top 10 Moments
Fresno State has seen eight new marks to its indoor Top 10 list this season. Four of the eight have come from program newcomers, while the remaining four have been veteran Bulldogs bettering their marks.
Rhiannon Walker, a first-year Bulldog, set the program record in the 5,000m run with a time of 17:15.29. She also is fifth all-time in the 3,000m with a time of 10:00.28. Freshman Hannah Pacheco is No. 8 all-time in the 800m with a time of 2:15.08. Transfer Nayla Martin has the program's No. 2 time in the mile, clocking a time of 4:49.93 this season.
Itzia Mejia Garcia tied the No. 2 time in the 60m run with a mark of 7.51 seconds, the fastest time by a Bulldog since 2017. Ella Spaulding is No. 3 in the pentathlon with 3,922 points and tied for sixth in the high jump with a mark of 1.72m/5-7.75 earlier this year. Liz Tarczy also bettered her previous mark in the high jump with a leap of 1.82m/5-11.5 to open the year.
The pentathlon podium duo
The pentathlon duo of Madison Hutton and Ella Spaulding have been a dynamic duo for the Bulldogs. Checking in at No. 2 (Hutton) and No. 3 (Spaulding) in the program's Top 10 list, the duo also currently sits No. 2 (Spaulding) and No. 4 (Hutton) in the Mountain West standings entering this weekend's championship.
Both Bulldogs have been to the podium at the indoor championship, just in different years. If both earn podium finishes this season, it would be the second time in program history that two Bulldogs medal in the indoor pentathlon and first time since 2024 (Hutton - 1st, Kaja Bins - 3rd).
Flashback to last season's championship
Fresno State finished fifth as a team with 51 points. The Bulldogs found the podium five times during the three-day meet. Fresno State earned two gold medals a season ago, in the high jump by Liz Tarczy and the 4x400 relay.
