FRESNO, Calif. – The Nevada Wolf Pack used early power and a late offensive surge to defeat the Fresno State baseball team, 9–4, on Friday night at Pete Beiden Field at Bob Bennett Stadium in the Mountain West opener for both teams.
With the loss, Fresno State dropped to 7–9 overall and 0–1 in conference play, while Nevada improved to 9–6 and 1–0 in the Mountain West.
Griffen Sotomayor led the Bulldogs offensively, going 3-for-4 with two home runs, three RBIs and three runs scored. Jett Ruby added two hits and an RBI, while Brady Hewitt finished with two hits and a double.
Nevada starter Alvaro Castro earned the win after allowing three runs over five innings, while reliever Brainard picked up the save with four innings of work. Fresno State starter Tyler Patrick was charged with the loss.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Nevada jumped out to an early lead in the opening inning. After reaching on an error, the Wolf Pack capitalized with back-to-back home runs from Kwon and Matsuzaki to take a 3–0 advantage.
Fresno State answered in the bottom half when Griffen Sotomayor launched a solo home run to right field to put the Bulldogs on the board.
The Bulldogs tied the game in the third inning. Brady Hewitt sparked the rally with a ground-rule double before Sotomayor struck again, blasting a two-run homer to deep left to make it 3–3.
Nevada regained the lead in the fourth inning, taking advantage of a pair of defensive miscues and a run-scoring single from Blythe to go back in front 5–3.
Fresno State trimmed the deficit to one in the sixth inning when Sotomayor singled and later scored on an RBI single from Jett Ruby, cutting the Wolf Pack lead to 5–4.
Nevada pulled away in the eighth inning. Matsuzaki led off with his second home run of the game, and the Wolf Pack added three more runs on a double by Harvey, a sacrifice fly from Quiban and an error that allowed another run to score, extending the lead to 9–4.
