Utah Tech walks off Fresno State in extras
3/20/2026 9:50:00 PM | Baseball
The Bulldogs dropped to 7-14 on the season despite totaling 12 hits, including home runs from Marcus Nolen and Zach Plasschaert. Utah Tech improved to 15-8 with the extra-inning win.
Brady Hewitt paced Fresno State with two hits and a run scored, while Owen Faust added two hits. Nolen finished with two RBIs on his fourth-inning homer, Ethan Payne drove in two with a key single in the eighth, and Ryan De La Maza delivered a pinch-hit RBI single during the Bulldogs' late rally. Plasschaert's solo homer in the top of the 10th gave Fresno State a 7-6 edge before Utah Tech responded in the bottom half.
How it happened
Fresno State struck first in the opening inning when Hewitt doubled and came home on Mikey Boyd's RBI single through the right side. Utah Tech answered in the bottom of the first, then took control in the third with three runs, helped by a throwing error and a sacrifice fly, to move in front 4-1.
The Bulldogs chipped away in the fourth when Cayden Munster doubled and Nolen launched a two-run homer to left center, trimming the deficit to 4-3. Fresno State then broke through in the eighth. After Jett Ruby was hit by a pitch and Cam Schneider singled, De La Maza came off the bench with an RBI single to tie the game. Payne followed two batters later with a two-run single to center, pushing the Bulldogs in front 6-4.
Utah Tech responded immediately in the bottom of the eighth, capitalizing on an error and a wild pitch to score twice and knot the game at 6-6. After a scoreless ninth for both sides, Plasschaert opened the 10th-inning scoring with a solo shot to center to put Fresno State back on top. But in the bottom half, after a one-out walk, Finnegan Stewart hit a two-run homer to center to end it.
Notes
- Fresno State got scoreless relief outings from Wyatt Thornbury, Victor Arreola and Douglas Crystal before the late Utah Tech push.
- Nolen and Plasschaert each homered, while Hewitt, Faust and Schneider were among the Bulldogs with multi-hit or timely-hit performances.
- The Bulldogs finished with 12 hits, but three errors proved costly in the one-run defeat.
