‘Dogs strike early, take down Long Beach State 5-2

FRESNO, Calif. – Fresno State jumped out early and never looked back, defeating Long Beach State 5-2 on Tuesday night at Bohl Diamond at Blair Field.
The Bulldogs (12-25-1) capitalized on early opportunities, plating three runs in the first two innings before adding two more in the fourth to build a 5-0 cushion. Long Beach State (12-28) chipped away late, but Fresno State's pitching staff held firm to secure the win.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Fresno State struck first in the opening inning when Sky Collins delivered an RBI single to score Jett Ruby, who reached via a walk. The Bulldogs added two more in the second inning, taking advantage of wild pitches and disciplined at-bats to extend the lead to 3-0.
The 'Dogs broke it open in the fourth inning as Griffen Sotomayor roped a two-run double to right field, scoring Ethan Payne and Ruby to make it 5-0.
On the mound, Erik Rico (1-2) earned the win in relief, tossing 5.0 innings and allowing just one run on one hit while striking out four. Fresno State used five pitchers in total, with William Page-Allen closing the door in the ninth to earn his second save of the season.
Long Beach State got on the board in the sixth inning with an RBI single from Trotter Enright and added another run in the seventh on an RBI double by Aaron Perez, but the comeback attempt fell short.
Despite being outhit 5-4, Fresno State drew nine walks and took advantage of key situations to generate offense. Sotomayor led the way with two hits and two RBIs, while Payne and Ruby each scored twice.
