FRESNO, Calif. - Fresno State showed off its new talents as seven new players saw time in the 2-1 victory against Cal State Northridge Saturday night. The Bulldogs paid back the Matadors in their only exhibition match in the preseason at Bulldog Stadium. Last year Northridge defeated Fresno State 2-0, allowing just two shots and no shots on goal. Saturday night the Bulldogs not only took 15 shots with seven being on goal, but netted two more than last season againt the Matadors.
Freshmen Katri Nokso-Koivisto (Kokkola, Finland), Eriko Yoshiki (Satte, Japan), Kortney Lewis, Kelly Irwin, Kristen Saibini (Reno, Nev.) and Ashley Saibini (Reno, Nev.) all made their Bulldog debut.
On offense freshman midfielder Kortney Lewis (Visalia, Calif.) led the charge for Fresno State scoring a goal and assisting on another. Lewis took two shots on the day, but colaborated with senior midfielder Amber Karlsson (Clovis, Calif.) to guide the attack in the midfield all night.
Senior defender Virginia Jenkins (Lompoc, Calif.) led the defense to a near-shutout. The Bulldog defense held Cal State Northridge to only six shots with four being on goal. The starting defensive line of Jenkins, junior Kristyn Kellogg (Atascadero, Calif.), freshman Kelly Irwin (Vacaville, Calif.) and sophomore Regina Esparza (Clovis, Calif.) allowed the Matadors zero shots in the first half of the game.
Fresno State scored its first goal in the 24:19 mark off a header by Jenkins off a cornerkick by Lewis. Jenkins, who scored her only goal of the season last year on a header, had a similar-type score in this match.
The second score came in the 85:26 mark when Lewis and Karlsson ran a two-on-one break that led to a Lewis score and a Karlsson assist. Lewis finished the night with three points.
Senior goalkeeper Mary-tyler Wahl (Riverside, Calif.) played 60 minutes of shutout ball to make way for junior Katy Klawitter (Fresno, Calif.) who finished up. Wahl and Klawitter combined for three saves.
The Matadors only score came with one second left in the match as Brynne Blumstein found a loose ball in the box area after a cornerkick.
Fresno State kicks off the regular season Friday, Aug. 30, at Colorado.
