The Fresno State soccer team was unable to pick up their first win of the season as they fell 3-0 to Oregon State on Friday afternoon.
CORVALLIS, Ore. – The Fresno State soccer team couldn't keep up with the momentum of Oregon State (2-0-0) on Friday afternoon as the Beavers beat the Bulldogs 3-0 at Paul Lorenz Field in Corvallis, Ore.
Â
Though Fresno State (0-3-0) was unable to score, the team showed a visible aggressiveness as they got off eight shots with three on goal, 19 fouls and received four yellow cards. The Bulldogs had recorded one shot on goal in the previous two games combined.
Â
"We knew we needed to bounce back from our North Carolina experience," Fresno State head coach Brian Zwaschka said, "One of our focuses was to generate more attacks and create more opportunities around the goal. We were pleased with the idea that we got ourselves into ideal positions more consistently."
Â
Fresno State sophomore goalkeeper Domenique Banta started her first game of the season. In the first half of play she surrendered three goals and saved two.
Â
Oregon State got off to a quick start as Mariah Roggow scored 1:29 into the game. In the 17th minute, Fresno State's Rianna Cota, in the midst of a crowded box, inadvertently kicked it into the Bulldogs' own net for an own goal. In the 35th minute, Emma Jones beat out Banta in a one-on-one situation to score the Beavers' third goal of the half.
Â
For the third-straight game, freshman Marie Berwinkel-Kottmann started the second half as goalkeeper for the 'Dogs. Berwinkel-Kottman allowed no goals and saved two.
Â
"I think we were rattled by that early goal," Zwaschka said. "But at the half, we regrouped around the idea that we knew we were playing better than the score reflected."
Â
Shots on goal by Fresno State were recorded by senior Fanny Johansson, sophomore Alissa Pham and newcomer Kaitlyn Crooker. Johansson, Crooker and sophomores Peyton Cline and Ashari Hines picked up yellow cards.
Â
This is not the first time a Zwaschka squad has been in this situation. In 2013, the 'Dogs began their season 0-3 without scoring a goal and went on to take second place in the conference.
Â
"Right now we are working on getting the team healthy and assembling the best lineup with the best set of strikers," Zwaschka added. "In 2013, we developed better organization defensively as well as a more consistent attack as time went on. We're confident these players on this team can do that that as well."
Â
The Bulldogs face Oregon (0-2-0) on Sunday at 1 p.m. in Eugene, Ore. The match will air on Pac-12 Oregon. The Ducks are slated to play San Francisco (1-0-1) at home on Friday night. Oregon won its only match against Fresno State 2-0 in 2009. The Ducks have yet to win a match this season, losing to LSU on Friday and Seattle on Sunday. In 2014, Oregon went 7-10-2.
