Clayton fires final round 69 to jump into St. Mary's Invitational top 10

The Bulldogs placed fourth of 14 teams at the St. Mary’s Invitational, led by Trevor Clayton’s third round push
PEBBLE BEACH, Calif. – The Fresno State men's golf team closed out its fall schedule on Wednesday with a fourth place finish at the Saint Mary's Invitational. It was a 54-hole event that spanned three days at Poppy Hills Golf Course with 84 individuals on 14 different teams vying for the team and individual titles.

Trevor Clayton was the Fresno State standout on the final day. The senior fired a 2-under-par 69 to vault from 21st after 36 holes, to tie for ninth place on the final leaderboard. Just as Justin Avery did on Monday, Clayton eagled No. 10, a 527-yard par 5, to gain momentum down the stretch. Clayton was even-par on the front-nine and 2-under on the back-nine on Wednesday.

Clayton started the event with rounds of 74 (+3) and 75 (+4) on days one and two, respectively; he shot 5-over-par for the tournament (218).

Avery finished tied for 13th. He posted his highest score of the three rounds to close out the St. Mary's Invite, a 6-over-par 77. Avery's low round was an ever-par 71, in the opening round. The junior was 8-over-par overall (221).

Alike Avery, Alex Lee posted a 6-over-par 77 on Wednesday, which secured a tie for 24th with a 54-hole 10-over-par (223). Teammate Greg Gildea trailed Lee by one stroke (224) and finished tied for 34th overall.

In his second event playing as a part of the group of five, Russell Takeuchi placed tied for 52nd. He shot his lowest score of the three days in the final round by carding a 3-over-par 74. Takeuchi was 16-over-par overall (229).

Cody Neal, who participated as an individual, fired a 54-hole 42-over-par 255 and placed 82nd.

Fresno State will be back in action Feb. 17-19, 2017 at the Wyoming Desert Intercollegiate, hosted at the Classic Club in Palm Desert, Calif.
