Junior center leads team with 12 points, 10 rebounds, four blocks, three assists and two steals.
FRESNO, Calif. --- The Fresno State women's basketball team suffered a 65-55 loss to Pac-12 foe Utah on Tuesday night at the Save Mart Center.
Fresno State (1-1) was led by a double-double effort from junior center Bego Faz Davalos, who had 12 points to go along with 10 rebounds for her first double-double this season. Faz Davalos finished 6-of-20 from the field and added four blocks, three assists and two steals. Sophomore guard Candice White chipped in 12 points, including going a perfect 8-for-8 from the free throw line, and added four rebounds and two assists. Freshman guard Kristina Cavey added 11 points, including a pair of three-pointers, and seven rebounds in 15 minutes.
After both teams struggled to get anything to fall in the opening minutes, Utah went on an 18-4 run in the final 6:30 of the first quarter to take a 10-point lead into second. Two quick buckets by the Utes pushed the lead to 14 before Bulldog senior Emilie Volk knocked down a 3-pointer to kick start the offense. Fresno State slowly crept back into the game and trailed by just five at the break after closing the half on an 8-0 run.
The Utes though answered in the second half with runs to start the third quarter and another which started late in the third quarter and went into the fourth. The two runs were too much for the Bulldogs as they were unable to overcome the deficit.
How it happened: Fresno State was held to 27.4 percent (17-62) in the contest as Utah extended a 31-26 halftime lead by as many as 14 with an 11-2 run to start the third quarter. The 'Dogs were able to cut the deficit to eight at 42-37 after a free throw by Cavey, but a quick 11-0 run by Utah at the end of the third quarter and the first 2:21 of the fourth quarter brought the lead to 53-37 as the visitors held at least an eight point lead for the remainder fo the contest.
Team Notes:
Bego Faz Davalos – 12 points, 10 rebounds, 4 blocks, 3 assists, 2 steals
Posted her 17th career double-double ... it was her 24th career game with double-figure rebounding total ... it was her 33rd double-figure career scoring performance ... it was the 40th time in her career she has led Fresno State in rebounding ... it was the 11th time she has led the 'Dogs in scoring in her career.
Kristina Cavey - 11 points, 7 rebounds, 2 3-pointers
Made her first two three-pointers as a Bulldog ... recorded first career double-digit scoring game.
Candice White - 12 points, 4 rebounds, 2 assists, 8-of-8 from the free throw line
Reached double figures for the second time in her career (back-to-back games) ... hit a career-best 8-of-8 from the free throw line.
Quotable:
Jaime White, Fresno State head coach
On where her team is at early in the season…
"I think they could execute and be a little more disciplined. Just understanding game-time situations. We had the one backcourt violation that we could've easily thrown over the timeline. We had some fumbling drives and sloppy passes, just execution in general. Utah is a team that is good but not so good that should make us play that way. There were times when we played great and there was other times we just weren't in rhythm I guess."
On shooting percentage…
"I thought we did a good job with the game plan as far as attacking their post players. When we went on that run right before halftime, it was because we were attacking those post players and getting them into some foul trouble. I think they felt like they couldn't help them at that point and they had to match to us—that was the goal. That was great. The other thing would be that coming out of halftime, you have to realize that they are going to change and we've got to change with them. I thought we got some great looks and we just didn't knock them down. I also thought that we had some hard shots that we did knock down. Again, that's just the game. It ebbs and flows. I just think we needed more positives."
On a challenging preseason with a fresh new team…
"Last year we had tough schedule with George Washington, Washington and Utah. We felt like it did prepare us for the Mountain West. It's hard though for us, to get an almost completely new roster and go against a Utah that did not, they only lost one kid from last year. They have all of their kids back. So that is very promising and I think that as long as we learn from the way we played, win, lose, or draw, we will be better for the Mountain West. That's the important part, learning from it."
Bego Faz Davalos, junior center
On double-team pressure…
"Yes it is frustrating but we knew that it was going to happen so we practiced for it, but I also feel like we have really good shooters. I'm very comfortable with passing to my teammates and knowing they can score."
On the challenging preseason schedule…
"I'm actually really excited about it. I feel like that's the kind of team you want to play against. They're a great team and you want to go hard and leave everything on the court. It's going to be fun and exciting."
Kristina Cavey, freshman guard/forward
On her first couple games as a Bulldog…
"It's awesome. The teammates are great. They are very helpful with making things work like clockwork, communicating and calming down any nerves I had. I think they are all very helpful in that part. It's just fun being out there and playing."
On not being the only new face on the team…
"It makes it a lot easier. They are all able to help adjust and get into a new offense. It's definitely been something we've had to work on but it's been fun."
