'Dogs look to complete winning season at San Jose State

Bulldogs defeat Utah State in four sets on Senior Night
Behind a season-high 65 kills as a team, the Bulldogs defeated Utah State in four sets last Wednesday night for Senior Night. After the Aggies won the first set 25-20, the 'Dogs came back to win the next three sets 25-23, 25-22 and 32-30. With the win, Fresno State improved to 14-14 on the season and 5-12 in Mountain West play and finished 7-6 at home for its fourth winning season at home in the last five years.
Senior outside hitter Aleisha Coates had her second-highest kill total of the season finishing with a team-high 23 kills and a .345 hitting percentage. Coates posted her fifth double-double adding 12 digs, three solo blocks and two service aces. Sophomore Aubrey Folk, returning to the lineup after missing four matches, totaled 12 kills and eight block assists, while Lauren Torres and Haile Watson chipped in seven kills apiece. Senior libero Maggie Eppright added 21 digs for her 24th career match with 20+ digs.
'Dogs vs. San Jose State History
The Bulldogs trail the all-time series with San Jose State 49-32 as the Spartans won both matches in 2015 as this will be the two teams' only meeting this season. The only MW school the 'Dogs do not host at the Save Mart Center this season, Fresno State enters Tuesday's meeting with the Spartans on a three-match losing streak in the series, but did win the previous nine meetings from Oct. 31, 2009 through Oct. 4, 2014.Â
Since San Jose State joined the MW in 2013, the 'Dogs are 3-3 winning both pair of matches in 2013 and at home in 2014, but fell on the road in four sets later that year. Under Netherby-Sewell, the 'Dogs are 9-5 overall against the Spartans since 2008 going 4-3 at SJSU and 5-2 at home.
A look at the San Jose State Spartans
San Jose State is 12-17 overall on the season with a 5-12 mark in the Mountain West entering the week in the RPI and tied with the 'Dogs for ninth in the MW, sitting a game behind New Mexico for eighth. The Spartans are coming off being swept at Utah State on Saturday falling 25-12, 25-20, 26-24. SJSU has picked up MW wins this season at home over New Mexico, Air Force, Colorado State and San Diego State and defeated Air Force on the road in five sets on Nov. 10.
The Spartans currently rank fourth in the Mountain West in digs (13.37 avg./s), and are fifth in blocks (2.44 avg./s), sixth in opponent hitting percentage (.208), seventh in assists (11.50 avg./s) and ninth in kills (12.16 avg./s). Individually, sophomore libero Luiza Andrade ranks fourth in the MW in digs (3.93 avg./s) and junior middle blocker Nandyala Gama is fifth in blocks (1.24 avg./s). Â Junior setter Breann Robinson is ninth in assists per set (8.63 avg./s) and has a total of 923, good for seventh-best. Appearing in only 79 of the Spartans 107 sets this season, sophomore outside hitter Giulia Gavio leads the team with 247 kills and has added 190 digs and 29 blocks.
Bulldogs senior trio plays their final match at Fresno StateÂ
After playing their final match as Bulldogs at home last week, the senior trio of Maggie Eppright, Brooke Legaux & Aleisha Coates will play their final match at Fresno State on Tuesday evening. Eppright and Legaux, both four-year members of the 'Dogs, have combined to win 53 matches, 28 at home and 25 MW matches since 2013. Coates has contributed to 28 of those wins, 16 at home and 11 MW matches over the last two years since transferring from New Mexico State.

Maggie Eppright: 124 matches played (T-7th in program history), 455 sets played (3rd), 1,766 digs (2nd), 3.88 digs per set (2nd), 257 assists, 77 service aces
Brooke Legaux: 114 matches played, 331 sets played, 1,850 assists (10th most in program history), 108 kills, 29 service aces, 437 digs
Aleisha Coates: 60 matches played, 222 sets played, 692 kills, 65 service aces, 425 digs, 28 solo blocks & 70 block assists
Fresno State ranks 16th in the nation in service aces per set; 32nd in service aces
The 'Dogs currently lead the MW and rank 16th in the nation in service aces per set (1.65). The Bulldogs also lead the MW in aces (172 - 32nd in the nation), rank 7th in blocks (2.12) and kills (12.38), are 8th in assists (11.44) and are 9th in hitting pct. (.201).
Bulldog Individual leaders in the Mountain West
Individually, a number of Bulldogs find themselves in the top five in the Mountain West. Junior Jacqueline Hutcheson leads the conference in service aces with 52 to rank 8th in the nation and also leads the conference & ranks 10th in the country in aces per set (0.50). Coates is fourth in the MW in points per set (4.31 avg./s), service aces (37), kills per set (3.60) and aces per set (0.36).
Eppright sits 13 digs shy of joining the Top 5 all-time in career digs in MW history
Eppright, who was named First Team CoSIDA Academic All-District on Nov. 3, moved into the MW top 10 all-time list in digs on Oct. 1. She currently sits in sixth place all-time with 1,766 career digs and is only 13 digs shy of moving into 5th-place currently held by Allison Davies (UNLV, 2011-14) on the all-time list.
Taylor Slover closing in on joining the 100-kill club
With two kills against the Spartans, Slover will be the seventh 'Dog this season to reach thae 100-kill milestone and it will be the first time since 2011 that seven 'Dogs have 100 or more kills in a season.
Hutcheson ranks third in aces per set & tied for eighth in single-season service aces
Hutcheson, who has appeared in all 104 sets and 28 matches this season, ranks tied for third in a single season in aces per set (0.50) & eighth in service aces with 52.
The 'Dogs are seventh in the Mountain West and 129th overall in the latest RPI released on Monday and the final rankings until the NCAA Tournament field is announced this Sunday. The MW has six teams in the top 100 as the Bulldogs downed Wyoming, 72nd in the RPI, on Oct. 20 in five sets and SDSU (90) on Nov. 5. Boise State, who clinched the MW automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament on Friday, tops the MW at #29 & the 'Dogs are 8-1 against teams below 150 and 6-13 against top 150 teams beating Wyoming, SDSU, New Mexico, Utah State, New Hampshire and Portland State.
With a Bulldogs win over the Spartans on Tuesday…..
- The 'Dogs will finish with their third winning record in the past five seasons.
- If New Mexico should fall at UNLV, Fresno State will finish tied for eighth in the Mountain West.
- It will be the 'Dogs first Mountain West road win of the season.
- The 'Dogs will end the season on a two-match winning streak for the first time since 2012.
- Netherby-Sewell will pick up her 120th career win at Fresno State.
