SAN ANTONIO - Improving to 6-0 away from the Save Mart Center and winning its fifth match in straight sets, the Fresno State volleyball team breezed past Prairie View A&M on Saturday morning in the UIW Cardinal Classic at the McDermott Convocation Center. The 'Dogs claimed individual sets 25-17, 25-6, 25-10.
"I liked how our team attacked Prairie View A&M from the service line today," said head coach Lauren Netherby-Sewell after the win. "We were far more consistent and aggressive. We want to keep that going against a tougher Incarnate Word team later today."
A day after hitting a season-best .455, Fresno State (7-2) continued to pound the ball hitting .365 with Aleisha Coates leading the way with 11 kills for her eighth match of the season with double digit kills. Junior Carly Scarbrough nearly matched her season-high with nine kills while Taylor Slover added six kills. The 'Dogs edged the Panthers in kills 37-13 and digs 40-22.
"Our primary passers in Jackie, Maggie and Aleisha are doing a great job staying consistent," added Netherby-Sewell. "It was great to see Gertu Vider come in during the second set, dig balls and make positive contributions."
The "Dogs were pushed in set one as the Panthers kept pace with the Bulldogs through the early going. The 'Dogs held a narrow 12-11 lead before four straight points, including two kills by Coates, pushed the lead to five and a attack error and another kill by Coates finished up the 'Dogs 25-17 set win. Fresno State hit .393 in the set compared to .103 for the Panthers.
Not letting Prairie View A&M stick around in the second set, the Bulldogs raced out to a quick 11-0 lead as Slover came off the bench to provide three kills and Madelyn Halteman provided a pair of aces. The 'Dogs increased their lead to 20-5 after a kill by Haile Watson and a kill by Slover and an attack error finished out the 'Dogs 25-6 set win for the fewest points a Bulldog opponent has scored in a set since Sept. 12, 2014 vs. Dartmouth.
The Bulldogs continued to assert their dominance in the third set jumping out to a 14-3 lead as the 'Dogs scored the final three points of the set to win 25-10.
