Clayton snags top 10 finish in season opening event

SAN FRANCISCO – Trevor Clayton secured a top 10 finish at the USF Olympic Invitational on Tuesday by posting a final round 3-over-par 74 to wrap up the 54-hole event at the Olympic Club. He finished the week 3-over-par (216) and claimed his fifth career top 10 finish in just 13 career tournaments as a Bulldog.

"Trevor is primed for another strong season," said head coach Chad Spencer. "He worked hard at his game over the summer and we are excited to see what the future holds."

Clayton may have had the low tournament score, but Greg Gildea posted Tuesday's low round for the 'Dogs. The junior fired a 1-under-par 70, which vaulted him into a tie for 19th after finishing Monday in a tie for 41st.

Teammate Justin Avery also tied for 19th. He followed Monday's second round 4-over-par 75 with the equivalent in Tuesday's finale. His best round came in the first round, a 1-under-par 70.

Alex Lee and Cody Neal each fired a 6-over-par 77 on Tuesday to close out the invitational. Lee placed tied for 37th while Neal tied for 74th after all three rounds.

As a team, the Bulldogs placed tied for seventh. Fresno State carded an 879 (+27) in the team scoring format on the par-71 course.

"Anytime you can start the season on a U.S. Open golf course your team will learn," Spencer said. "This was a great tournament for our team to start with and it will help prepare us for the remainder of the season."

Next up for the Bulldogs is a trip to the Ram Masters Invitational at Fort Collins Country Club, hosted by Colorado State on Oct. 19-20.
