FRESNO, Calif. – Holding the lead for more than 39 minutes, Fresno State saw Colorado State level Saturday afternoon's game with a 3-pointer from Myanne Hamm at the end of regulation before topping the Bulldogs in overtime, 66-64, at the Save Mart Center.
Candice White led the Bulldogs with 18 points, 12 during the first half. Tory Jacobs (13) and Bego Faz Davalos (12) also reached double figures for the 'Dogs. Faz Davalos led the team with nine rebounds while Jacobs and White each had seven apiece. CSU saw four players in double figures. Nystrom tied White with a game-high 18 points, while Elin Gustavsson recorded a double-double with 17 points and 14 rebounds.
Fresno State came out clicking, running out to a 10-2 lead four minutes into the game before Colorado State was forced to call an early timeout to slow the Bulldogs' momentum. The 'Dogs continued to keep the Rams at bay, allowing CSU to get within only six during the opening quarter before an 8-2 run late in the frame gave Fresno State its largest lead of the day at 20-8 with 45 seconds left in the first period.
After shooting just 28.7 percent (4-of-14) during the first, Colorado State seemed to settle into the game during the second. A 7-1 spurt to start the quarter brought the Rams back within four. The Bulldogs pushed their advantage back up to 10 midway through the second period with a 6-0 run, but a pair of 3-pointers from Stine Austgulen allowed the visitors to chip into Fresno State's lead by halftime.
One of the few teams to out-score the Bulldogs during the third quarter in conference play this season, the Rams again got the upper hand, again, pulling within two by the end of the third to trail 47-42 heading into the fourth quarter. The 'Dogs continued to attack the basket early in the period extending their lead to eight with 5:14 on the clock, but within a minute-and-a-half, the lead had disappeared through a quick 7-0 spurt which brought CSU within one with 3:38 remaining in the quarter.
Jacobs dropped in a layup at the 2:17 mark to extend Fresno State's advantage to three, and after a trio of missed shots from the Rams, White knocked down a baseline jumper with 52 seconds on the clock to extend the lead to five. Out of a CSU timeout, Nystrom knocked down a jumper to pull the Rams back within three. The 'Dogs, who were unable to get a clean look out of a timeout on their next possession, CSU struck back at the other end. A missed foul attempt in the backcourt then led to Hamm getting an open look from the right wing for her third 3 of the afternoon to send the game to overtime.
A minute-and-a-half into overtime, Colorado State grabbed its first lead of the game on a jumper from Hamm. A pair of free throws from Gustavsson on the Rams' next possession extended their lead to four. After a free throw from Faz Davalos, and back-to-back buckets from White, the 'Dogs pushed ahead by one with 51 seconds left in the extra period. A foul on the other end after an offensive rebound from Hannah Tvrdy put the junior on the line where she hit 1-of-2 to level the game.
Looking to drive to put the 'Dogs ahead once again, White got trapped and was tied-up to give the ball back to CSU. Out of the timeout, Nystrom knocked down a jumper inside the left elbow to give CSU the two-point win.
Key Moments: Looking to extend a lead at the end the regulation, and take a lead late in overtime, Fresno State was forced into a tough shot with the shot clock expiring and a turnover, respectively. Colorado State capitalized on both stops with a 3-pointer with five seconds remaining in regulation and a jumper with two seconds left in overtime.
