Clayton fires final round 68, finishes sixth

The Bulldogs place 10th among 16 teams after three days at the Bandon Dunes Championship
Bandon, Ore. – Behind a final round 4-under-par 68, Trevor Clayton earned a tie for sixth place to lead the Fresno State men's golf team at the Bandon Dunes Championship on Tuesday. Greg Gildea also earned a top 20 finish for the Bulldogs, having placed tied for 18th versus the field of 90 individuals.

"On a tremendous golf course, Trevor and Greg stepped up with quality finishes this week," said head coach Chad Spencer. "We are starting to put together the rounds I know this team can produce."

Clayton's dynamic round started and finished with a bogey, but in between he settled in to go 6-under with an eagle, four birdies and 11 pars in that span. The senior's 68 tied four others for the lowest single round during Tuesday's action.

Clayton's finish was his best of the 2016-17 season and was also his lowest 54-hole score this academic year – 5-under-par 211 (73-70-68).

Gildea rebounded in the third round with a 1-over-par 73; the junior started the tournament red hot with a 3-under-par 69, but cooled off with a day-two 5-over-par 77. He finished with a 3-over-par 219 tournament score.

Gildea gained his ground on the leaderboard, having tied for the best par-3 score among all individuals after 54 holes with a 2.83 average.

Alex Lee fired his best round of the tournament, carding an even-par 72 on Tuesday. He finished the event 5-over-par and placed tied for 49th.

Justin Avery posted a final round 7-over-par 79 while teammate Cody Neal had a 10-over-par 82. Avery finished tied for 63rd and Neal placed 89th.

As a team, Fresno State finished in 10th place with an 880 and topped all Mountain West teams in action at Gonzaga's home tournament. Oregon, the nation's No. 8 team according to Golfstat, won the event by posting an 836.

Next up for the Bulldogs is the Goodwin, a three-day tournament hosted by Stanford starting March 30.
