Lengthy contest goes way of Nevada as Bulldogs fall 10-8
3/4/2017 11:00:00 PM | Baseball
The Bulldogs and Wolf Pack will play the rubber match on Sunday at 2:05 p.m.
For the eighth time in 10 games, Fresno State (5-5, 1-1 MW) outhit its opponent as the Bulldogs had 12 hits compared to nine hits for Nevada (3-7, 1-1 MW). The fifth double-digit hitting performance of the season for the 'Dogs,  senior outfielder Austin Guibor led the way at the plate by tying his career-high with three hits, including his third triple of the season and scored two runs.
Sophomore Zach Ashford added a pair of hits, including an RBI triple in the ninth inning, and drew a career-high three walks. Senior third baseman Jesse Medrano added two hits, including a double, drove in two RBIs and scored a run.Â
The Wolf Pack got seven of its nine hits from three players as senior Justin Bridgman had three hits and scored a pair of runs. Junior outfielder Cole Krzmarzick added two singles, an RBI and scored a run, while freshman infielder Jaylon McLaughlin went 2-for-2 with a three-run home run and drew three walks.
Nevada got the scoring started early in the top of the first nabbing a pair of runs off Bulldog starter Rickey Ramirez before the 'Dogs answered back with a run in the bottom of the inning on an RBI single by junior first baseman Aaron Arruda.
The Bulldogs took its lone lead of the game in the bottom of the fourth taking advantage of two Wolf Pack errors to score a pair as Scott Silva and Nick Warren came around to give the 'Dogs a 3-2 lead.
The lead was short lived for Fresno State as Nevada answered right back with five runs in the fifth inning scoring two runs before McLaughlin cleared the bases with his first career home run, a three-run shot to right field to put Nevada ahead 7-3.
After the teams traded one run apiece, the Bulldogs cut the deficit to two with a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth thanks to a two-run RBI single up the middle by Medrano drove in Jake Stone and Guibor. Looking to continue to cut into Nevada's lead, the 'Dogs left the bases loaded as pinch-hitter Jeremiah Burks went down on strikes.
An RBI groundout by Arruda drove in Ryan Dobson in the bottom of the seventh to make it a 8-7 contest heading into the eighth inning. Nevada was able to push across two key insurance runs, both unearned, off a two-run RBI single by Nevada's Jordan Pearce to extend its lead to 10-7.
A late two-out rally in the bottom of the ninth came up short as Ashford tripled to center field to bring in Guibor from first, but a flyout by Arruda ended hopes of a Bulldog comeback.
Ramirez took the loss as the junior went five innings allowing seven hits, seven runs, six earned, three walks and struck out three. Fred Schlichtholz, Adam Medrano and Ryan Jensen saw time out of the bullpen as the trio tossed a combined four innings allowing only two hits and one earned run.
Each team stranded 13 runners apiece as the 'Dogs issued nine walks and the Wolf Pack allowed eight free passes, including seven by Nevada starter Mark Nowaczewski who picked up his first win of the season despite allowing six runs.
The Bulldogs and Wolf Pack conclude their Mountain West opening series on Sunday at 2:05 p.m. It will be Salute to Sunday as all military and veterans get into the game for free.
