The Fresno State baseball team suffered a heartbreaking 12-11 walk-off defeat at Pacific on Wednesday evening.
The Tigers won on a walk-off single in the bottom of the ninth by second baseman Preston Moebius off Bulldog pitcher Dominic Topoozian that plated two runs to help the Tigers escape with a victory in a game that saw six lead changes.
Fresno State (18-18) had used a two-run RBI double by Zach Ashford in the top of the ninth to pull ahead 11-10, but were unable to hold onto the lead. The 'Dogs pounded out 17 hits in the contest as six different Bulldogs had multi-hit games. Senior outfielder Austin Guibor had a career-high four hits, all singles, out of the leadoff spot, scored a run and drove in two RBIs. Ashford had a single, double, a career-high three RBIs and scored a run while freshman catcher Carter Bins had a pair of singles and scored two runs.
Pacific (13-21), who won for only the second time in its last 12 games, slugged out 15 hits as its top four batters in the lineup each had two hits apiece and Moebius had a team-high three hits, drove in three RBIs and scored a run.
The 'Dogs scored first for the 20th time this season wasting little time taking a 1-0 lead in the top of the first as first baseman Aaron Arruda hit a one-out single to left field and came around to score on an RBI double to right center by right fielder Jake Stone.
After being held to one hit in the first two innings by Bulldog starter JJ Santa Cruz, Pacific exploded for five runs in the third sending 10 batters to the plate as the Tigers slugged out six hits. Shortstop Matt Tarantino tied the game at 1-1 with an RBI double to left center which was followed by a three-run home run to left field by designated hitter James Free that extended the lead to 4-1. Pacific rounded out the scoring driving in an unearned run on a single up the middle by catcher Joey Riherd.
The 'Dogs offense responded with its third frame of the season of six-plus runs in the top of fourth as designated hitter Jared Akins led off with his team-leading 14th double of the season. Shortstop Korby Batesole followed with a single to left field to put runners at the corners and a hit by a pitch to Bins loaded the bases for Guibor. The senior outfielder delivered with a single through the left side driving in Akins and Batesole to cut the Tigers' lead to 5-3.
An RBI single through the left side by Arruda brought in Bins to make it 5-4 and the 'Dogs tied the game on a fielder's choice by Stone. After second baseman Scott Silva knocked a single back up the middle, his lone hit of the game, to load the bases, third baseman Jesse Medrano was hit by a pitch for the third time this season to give the 'Dogs a 6-5 lead and Fresno State finished the scoring with a sacrifice fly to left field by Akins.
The back-and-forth nature of the game swayed the way of the Tigers as they scored the next three runs of the contest to take a 8-7 lead scoring a run in the fourth on a double to left center by Free and added two runs in the bottom of the fifth on back-to-back RBI singles by Moebius and third baseman Kevin Sandri giving Pacific back a 8-7 lead.
The Tigers added a run in the sixth on an RBI double to right center by first baseman Ryan Schalch to extend its lead to 9-7.
The Bulldogs refused to let up tying the game at 9-9 with one run in each of the seventh and eighth innings. The 'Dogs platted a run in the seventh on a two-out RBI single back up the middle by Ashford that scored Bins from third and tied the game in the top of the eighth as Medrano stole home as Akins faked a stolen base attempt to second forcing Tiger catcher Joey Riherd to throw down to second base and allow Medrano to score.
Pacific took back the lead in the bottom of the eighth with a leadoff home run by shortstop Matt Tarantino off Fred Schlichtholz to go up 10-9, but Ashford's two-run RBI double in the ninth inning put the 'Dogs back on top.
The 'Dogs used five pitchers in the contest while Pacific countered with seven as Topoozian suffered his second loss of the season. Junior JJ Santa Cruz made his fifth start last 2.2 innings before giving way to Ryan Jensen for 1.2 innings. Senior Mark Reece went a season-high 2.2 innings allowing only two hits and one earned run.
Fresno State returns to action on Friday staying on the road to face Nevada (11-26, 7-11 MW) at 6 p.m. from Peccole Park.
