A ninth-inning rally by the Bulldogs came up short on Friday as the 'Dogs fell 5-4 at Nevada.
RENO, Nev. - A late ninth-inning rally fell short as a three-run fourth inning for Nevada proved to be too much to overcome for the Fresno State baseball team on Friday evening as the 'Dogs fell 5-4 to the Wolf Pack at Peccole Park.
Fresno State (18-19, 8-8 MW) totaled nine hits in the contest as eight different Bulldogs tallied a hit, including four for extra bases. Junior first baseman Aaron Arruda hit his ninth double of the season, senior outfielder Jake Stone smacked his first triple of the season, junior outfielder Jared Akins hit his second home run of the season and senior outfielder Austin Guibor had his 14th multi-hit game of the season going 2-for-4 with a single, double, RBI and scored a run.
Nevada (12-26, 8-11 MW) totaled 11 hits in the contest with junior third baseman Jordan Pearce leading the way with three hits in four at-bats and drove in an RBI. Junior right fielder Mike Echavia added a single, double and scored two runs, while left fielder Chase Grant and center fielder Cole Krzmarzick each had a pair of hits.
The 'Dogs took a quick 1-0 lead in the top of the second capitalizing on an advantageous call by the third base umpire. On a check-swing by Akins that would have ended the frame, a called-ball gave the junior left fielder new life as he capitalized smacking a solo shot to right center.
The Wolf Pack responded with a pair of runs in the bottom of the inning off Bulldog starter Edgar Gonzalez to take a 2-1 lead getting an RBI single back up the middle by Krzmarzick before a two-out double down the right field line by Echavia pushed Nevada out in front.
After a scoreless third inning, Stone got the fourth inning jump-started with his first triple of the season and sixth of his career spraying the ball to left center. Senior second baseman Scott Silva tied the game at 2-2 with an RBI groundout to Keaton Smith at second base for his 32nd run driven in this season.
Nevada broke the tie with a three-run bottom of the fourth as the first four Wolf Pack batters reached on singles before a bases-loaded walk to Echavia brought in the second run of the frame and the final run was scored on a 6-4-3 double play turned by the 'Dogs.
The Bulldogs added a run in the fifth on a two-out RBI double down the right field line by Arruda that drove in Guibor, who reached base on a walk before advancing on a throwing error and a wild pitch, to cut the Wolf Pack lead to 5-3.
After being held to one hit in the sixth, seventh and eighth, a one-out single by shortstop Korby Batesole gave the 'Dogs an opportunity to rally in the ninth. With Jeremiah Burks pinch-running for Batesole, Guibor laced a two-out double down the right field line to plate Burks and make it a one-run contest. Senior Ryan Dobson pinch-ran for Guibor representing the tying run, but a strikeout by designated hitter Zach Ashford ended the game.
After tossing a career-high 7.2 innings last week against Air Force, Gonzalez suffered his second loss of the season as he lasted 6.2 innings allowing 11 hits, five runs, four walks and struck out five. Junior Fred Schlichtholz came on for the final 1.1 innings and picked up a strikeout.
Fresno State returns to action on Saturday playing game two of the series against the Wolf Pack at 6 p.m.
