Bulldogs hold on for a 7-5 win at UC Riverside

Behind three home runs and contributions from five pitchers, the Fresno State baseball team picked up its third straight win on Wednesday afternoon defeating UC Riverside 7-5 at Riverside Sports Complex.
RIVERSDE, Calif. - Behind three home runs and contributions from five pitchers, the Fresno State baseball team picked up its third straight win on Wednesday afternoon defeating UC Riverside 7-5 at Riverside Sports Complex.
Fresno State (23-21) was powered by the hot-hitting of junior first baseman Aaron Arruda who smacked two two-run home runs for his second multi-home run game of the season and finished with four RBIs for his 12th multi-RBI game of the season.
Arruda now has 25 career home runs as he now sits at 13 on the season after hitting 11 as a sophomore and one as a freshman. He currently sits in a tie for 15th all-time in home runs in program history with Christian Vitters and Simon Tafoya.
Freshman catcher Carter Bins hit his third home run of the season while junior outfielder Jared Akins smacked his team-leading 18th double of the season. Senior third baseman Jesse Medrano added his 17th double of the season and junior shortstop Korby Batesole made it three doubles for the 'Dogs on the afternoon with his fourth two-base hit of the season.
UC Riverside (16-24) had 14 hits on the afternoon led by left fielder AJ Sawyer and third baseman Michael Farris who each had three hits in the contest. The Highlanders finished with five extra-base hits, including a triple by Sawyer.
The 'Dogs got the scoring started early in the top of the first with the first of Arruda's two home runs as senior outfielder Austin Guibor led off with a single and Arruda's shot to left-center gave the 'Dogs an early 2-0 lead. UCR got one run back in the bottom of the inning off starter JJ Santa Cruz, who picked up his third win of the season, on a sacrifice fly by designated hitter Connor Cannon.
An RBI single through the right side by sophomore Zach Ashford scored Akins in the top of the fourth to put the 'Dogs up 3-1 and the second of Arruda's long balls in the fifth drove in Stone to give the Bulldogs a 5-1 advantage.
The Highlanders were able to slowly chip away at the 'Dogs lead getting one run back in the fifth and sixth off Bulldog reliever Dominic Topoozian to make it a 5-3. A one-out solo shot by Bins in the seventh gave Fresno State a three-run lead, but again UCR was able to cut it to two with a run in the bottom of the eighth off Edgar Gonzalez as pinch-hitter Yeagar Taylor came through with a single to left center.
Batesole came through with a much-needed insurance run in the top of the ninth inning driving in Medrano with a double to right center to put the Bulldogs up 7-4. UCR again refused to go away easily getting an RBI double by designated hitter Connor Cannon to trim the lead to 7-5 and after Cannon moved to third on a wild pitch, Gonzalez was able to get strikeouts of the final two UCR batters to seal the win.Â
Santa Cruz tossed the first two innings to pick up his third win of the season which was followed by two scoreless innings from Fred Schlichtholz and after two innings from Topoozian, Rickey Ramirez came on for 1.2 innings picking up three strikeouts. Gonzalez worked the final 1.1 innings and struck out two as all five pitchers had at least one strikeout and combined for a total of 11 for the 'Dogs 13th game with double-digit strikeouts.
The Bulldogs return to action on Friday evening when they travel to UNLV (17-30, 7-14 MW) for a three-game series with the Rebels at Earl E. Wilson Stadium.
