The Fresno State baseball team pushed its winning streak to five games on Saturday afternoon with an 11-5 victory over UNLV at Earl E. Wilson Stadium and go for the series sweep on Sunday at 1:05 p.m.
"Pitching and defense are what is going to get it done down the stretch and despite playing in some offensive conditions today with the wind, our defense was fantastic," said head coach Mike Batesole after the win. "[Starting pitcher] Edgar Gonzalez was stronger at the end of the game than he was at the beginning and looked great and our offense is a very veteran group and put together great at-bats all day."
Fresno State (25-21, 13-10 MW), who has now won seven of its last eight games, slugged out 18 hits on the afternoon for its fifth straight game with double-digit hits. All nine position players who started had at least one hit and eight of the nine scored at least one run.
Seven different Bulldogs had multi-hit games, including a pair with three hits apiece as senior outfielder Ryan Dobson matched his career-best with three hits, scored a run and drove in an RBI. Fellow senior outfielder Austin Guibor added three hits, including his 11th double of the season, and drove in a run.
Senior outfielder Jake Stone added two home runs, his first multi-home run game of his career, four RBIs and scored a career-best four runs as the Carlsbad native now has three home runs in the series and five on the season.
UNLV (17-32, 7-16 MW) pounded out 10 hits on Bulldog pitching as second baseman Justin Jones led the Rebels with a 3-for-3 performance adding his eighth home run of the season.
Scoring first for the 29th time this season, the 'Dogs jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the second with an RBI single back up the middle by Dobson that drove in freshman catcher Carter Bins.
The 'Dogs added three runs in the top of the third getting one run each on back-to-back RBI singles by junior designated hitter Jared Akins and senior second baseman Scott Silva as the final run of the frame came home to score on an RBI single to third base that UNLV's Nick Rodriguez was unable to corral scoring Akins from third.
After being held to two hits through the first three innings by Bulldog starter Edgar Gonzalez, UNLV was able to cut the 'Dogs lead in half in the bottom of the fourth with a two-run home run to center field by Jones.
Picking up the first two outs of the fifth with ease, Gonzalez ran into trouble after a single by left fielder Ernie De La Trinidad and walk to Jones put a pair on right fielder Cody Howard who delivered his third home run of the season with a three-run shot to left field that put UNLV on top 5-4.
The Bulldogs responded right away in the top of the sixth as Guibor led off with a double to center field and Stone followed with a two-run shot to center field as the 'Dogs re-gained the lead at 6-5.
The Rebels threatened to tie the game in the seventh, but Jones, who reached on a single, was picked off of first base by Gonzalez to give the sophomore his first pick off of the season. The 'Dogs added an insurance run in the eighth on an RBI single through the left side by Akins to take a 7-5 lead.
With Gonzalez finished after seven innings, junior southpaw Fred Schlichtholz came on in the eighth and despite facing early trouble, was able to escape it thanks to a crucial double play by Dobson as the senior made a diving catch in center field and was able to get up and throw out a Rebel runner at first base.
Fresno State added four runs in the top of the ninth to break the game open as an RBI double by junior shortstop Korby Batesole and a sacrifice fly by Guibor put the 'Dogs up by four and Stone's second home run of the day, a two-run shot to left field, made it 11-5.
Senior Dominic Topoozian came on to work a flawless ninth as the 'Dogs sealed the series win. Â Gonzalez picked up his fourth win of the season and struck out six for his third game of the season with six or more strikeouts.
The Bulldogs go for the series sweep over the Rebels on Sunday at 1:05 p.m.
