After playing nine of their last 12 games on the road, the Bulldogs return home to host Sacramento State on Tuesday at 6:05 p.m. on the Mountain West Network.
Fresno State (25-22, 13-11 MW) was held to six hits on the afternoon for its fewest hits in a game since April 28 against San Jose State. Five of the 'Dogs six hits went for extra-bases as it was their seventh straight game with five or more extra-base hits and it was the 14th game of the season with five or more extra-base knocks.
Senior second baseman Scott Silva was the lone 'Dog to notch multiple hits as he totaled a double and a home run, drove in two RBIs and scored two runs. Senior outfielder Austin Guibor hit his Mountain West-leading fifth triple of the season and 14th in his career as he now sits alone in second place all-time in program history in triples.
Junior outfielder Jared Akins smacked his team-leading 19th double of the season and senior third baseman Jesse Medrano added his fifth home run of the season.
Scoring first for the sixth time in the last seven games, the 'Dogs jumped on the board right off the bat in top of the first as Guibor laced a first-pitch triple down the right field line and came home to score on a sacrifice fly by junior first baseman Aaron Arruda who drove in his team-leading 55th RBI of the season.
The Rebels wasted little time responding answering back with a three-run frame in the bottom of the first picking up RBI singles by designated hitter Payton Squier and right fielder Cody Howard before completing the scoring with a double to left-center by shortstop Bryson Stott.
After Bulldog starter Rickey Ramirez surrendered a leadoff double to catcher Vince Taormina to start the second, he was replaced by senior right-hander Dominic Topoozian, but UNLV was able to continue its hot hitting as third baseman Nick Rodriguez greeted the new Bulldog hurler with an RBI triple to right-center scoring Taormina . The Rebels made it 5-1 with a sacrifice fly by center fielder Kyle Isbel scoring Rodriguez.
UNLV added two runs in the bottom of the third as Howard launched his fourth home run of the season and an RBI single to left field by Isbel scored Taormina to extend the home team's lead to 7-1.
The 'Dogs responded in the fourth getting those two runs back to bring the margin back within four as Silva and Medrano smacked back-to-back two-out home runs to make it 7-3. The Rebels responded right away in the bottom of the frame with a two-run home run to right-center by second baseman Justin Jones as UNLV took a 9-3 lead.
After a quick fifth inning, Fresno State again closed the margin to within four at 9-5 in the top of the sixth with a pair of runs. Silva laced a double to left-center to drive in Akins who reached base on a double and after his base hit knocked out UNLV starting pitcher Paul Richy after 5.2 innings, Medrano welcomed new UNLV hurler Corey Wilson with a liner to third that escaped Rodriguez at third that was ruled an error allowing Silva to score an unearned run.
The Rebels continued to answer right back scoring two runs in the sixth with a two-run single through the left side by Stott that put UNLV up 11-5. UNLV tacked on one run in the seventh and two more in the eighth to complete the scoring as the Rebels scored in seven of their eight half-innings in the contest.
Ramirez suffered the loss as he was only able to work 1.0 inning before giving way to Topoozian for an inning. Junior JJ Santa Cruz worked 0.2 innings before being relieved for freshman right-hander Ryan Jensen who tossed a career-best 4.1 innings throwing 78 pitches and struck out three. Freshman Davis Moore, Adam Medrano and Isaiah Davis finished out the game on the mound for the 'Dogs.
After playing nine of its last 12 games on the road, the Bulldogs return home to host Sacramento State (24-24) on Tuesday at 6:05 p.m. for Autism Awareness Night.
