FRESNO, Calif. - Continuing to pound the ball offensively, the Fresno State baseball team totaled 20 hits on Tuesday night as the 'Dogs defeated Sacramento State 9-2 at Pete Beiden Field at Bob Bennett Stadium.
Fresno State (26-22) had its second-most hits in a game this season totaling 20 hits as a team as the 'Dogs offense stayed red-hot all game. Three Bulldogs had three-hit performances led by junior shortstop Korby Batesole who went 3-for-4 with a double, home run and matched his career-high with three RBIs. Senior outfielder Jake Stone and junior first baseman Aaron Arruda each had three hits apiece as Stone added a run and an RBI while Arruda added his 11th double of the season and scored a pair of runs.
Five other 'Dogs had two hits apiece as eight of the nine starting position players had two or more hits and 10 different players had at least one hit in the game.
Sacramento State (24-25) was held to seven hits in the contest by Bulldog pitching as first baseman Vinny Esposito was the lone Hornet with multiple hits as he added an RBI. The Hornets did add two doubles in the contest getting one from shortstop Trent Goodrich and the other from left fielder Kody Gardner.
The Hornets started the scoring in the top of the first off Bulldog starter JJ Santa Cruz as Goodrich belted a double to left-center that scored center fielder Ian Dawkins who reached base on a walk to lead off the game. After senior right-hander Dominic Topoozian replaced Santa Cruz with a full count to the Hornets' third batter, Esposito, the Sacramento State hitter greeted him with a single through the left side to score Goodrich and give the visitors a 2-0 lead.
After being held off the scoreboard in the first inning by Hornet starter Tanner Olson, the Bulldogs were able to get to Olson in the second inning for a pair of runs to tie the game as sophomore designated hitter Zach Ashford singled to left field and an error by the Sacramento State left fielder allowed Scott Silva to score from second base. Freshman catcher Carter Bins followed two batters later with a single through the left side to drive in Ashford.
The 'Dogs continued to keep pounding out the hits in the third inning picking up five more hits as Arruda and junior outfielder Jared Akins led off with singles before a single back up the middle by Silva scored Arruda. An inning-ending single to center field by Batesole plated Silva as the 'Dogs took a 4-2 lead as Batesole was tossed out attempting to advance to second base.
Fresno State continued the scoring in the fourth inning with two more runs to take a 6-2 lead as Arruda doubled down the left field line to plate Stone and Akins followed with a single to center field to drive in Arruda.
The Bulldogs rounded out the scoring in the fifth inning with three runs as Batesole lifted only his second home run of the season and only third of his career with a two-run shot to right field and Stone finished the night with a single to second base that gave the Hornet defense trouble allowing Bins to score from third.
After Santa Cruz allowed the lone two runs of the night, the pitching staff pitched a shutout as Topoozian came on for three innings allowing only two hits with three strikeouts to pick up his third win of the season before Fred Schlichtholz, Mark Reece and Rickey Ramirez each worked two innings apiece combining for four strikeouts.
The 'Dogs return to action this weekend when they host their final Mountain West home series of the season welcoming New Mexico (28-20-1, 18-4-1 MW) for a three-game series with a pair of 6:05 p.m. starts on Friday and Saturday before wrapping up the weekend on Sunday with Senior Day at 1:05 p.m.
