
Seven Diamond 'Dogs drafted on the final day of the 2017 MLB Draft

The Fresno State baseball program saw seven student-athletes drafted on the final day of the 2017 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft on Wednesday.
FRESNO, Calif. - The Fresno State baseball program saw seven student-athletes drafted on the final day of the 2017 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft on Wednesday.
Joining junior southpaw Ricky Tyler Thomas, who was selected in the 7th round by the Chicago Cubs on Tuesday, were juniors Aaron Arruda (12th round, Oakland Athletics), Jared Akins (13th round, Minnesota Twins), Fred Schlichtholz (13th round, San Diego Padres) and Rickey Ramirez (15th round, Minnesota Twins). Rounding out the selections for the Bulldogs were seniors Ryan Dobson (30th round, Arizona Diamondbacks), Austin Guibor (30th round, Washington Nationals) and Jesse Medrano (31st round, Pittsburgh Pirates).
The eight-man draft class for Fresno State is tied for the third-most players drafted in a single draft in program history as the 'Dogs also had eight players selected in 1990 and 1992. The Bulldogs had a record 10 players selected in 2011 and nine in 1984.
"What a great day for Fresno State," said head coach Mike Batesole. "All of our seniors graduated on time and now we have nine of our student-athletes who have the opportunity to fulfill their next dream. We love it when these guys get what they came here for!," added Batesole.
In addition to the eight Bulldogs drafted, senior outfielder Jake Stone signed a free agent contract with the Tampa Bay Rays.
Aaron Arruda, Junior, 1B, 12th Round, Oakland Athletics
Leading the way on a busy day for the Bulldogs was junior first baseman Aaron Arruda. The Clovis native and 2014 graduate of Buchanan High School earned his second straight First-Tea, All-Mountain West selection this spring after starting all 60 games at first base as he led the team in batting average (.373), hits (91), home runs (15), RBIs (67), total bases (157), on-base percentage (.448), slugging percentage (.643) and fielding percentage (.993). He totaled a team-high 33 multi-hit games on the season, added 15 multi-RBI contests and matched the single-game program records for home runs with three and RBIs with nine at Nevada on April 23.
Named to the ABCA/RawlingsSports All-West Region First Team on Wednesday, Arruda led the Mountain West in hits (91) and total bases (157) while finishing second in the league in RBIs (67) and home runs (15), tied for third in batting average (.373), sixth in slugging percentage (.643), seventh in on-base percentage (.448), ninth in runs (57) and tied for 11th in doubles (17).

Named to the ABCA/RawlingsSports All-West Region Second Team on Wednesday, Akins was sixth on the club with 20 multi-hit games and fourth with 12 multi-RBI contests. He tallied a season-high five hits in a pair of games going 5-for-6 with two doubles and two RBIs at Pepperdine (March 7) and was perfect 5-for-5 with a double, two home runs, three runs and five runs scored in the 'Dogs 11-5 win over New Mexico (May 27) in the Mountain West Tournament.

The San Diego native ranked fourth on the team in innings pitched (61.2) and strikeouts (64) and picked up a pair of saves against Air Force (April 13) and New Mexico (May 12).Â

Another four-year Bulldog, Guibor earned Second-Team All-Mountain West honors as a sophomore in 2015. As a senior, he appeared in all 60 games on the season starting 57 contests (22 in CF & 35 in RF). The Campbell, Calif., native ranked seventh on the team with a .311 average from the plate and added 76 hits, 12 doubles, five triples and five home runs. He totaled 23 multi-hit games and 11 multi-RBI games on the season.
Guibor finishes his career tied for eighth all-time in program history with 215 games played and tied for 28th all-time with 19 home runs. A .305 career hitter, Guibor totaled 220 hits, including 65 for extra-bases. He tallied 32 doubles, 14 triples and 19 home runs, drove in 110 RBIs and 159 runs.

He tied for fourth in the MW in triples (4), ranked sixth in doubles (19) & runs scored (60) and finished eighth in the league in hits (84).
He totaled 27 multi-hit games and added 12 multi-RBI games on the season. He matched his career high with four hits on Senior Day against New Mexico (May 14) smacking a home run and drove in three RBIs and scored three runs in a 15-9 win over the Lobos.

Named to the ABCA/RawlingsSports All-West Region Second Team on Wednesday, Stone finished with five three-hit contests, scored a career-best four runs twice and drove in a career-high four RBIs on two occasions in wins over Air Force (April 13) and UNLV (May 6). His 39 career doubles are only four shy of being in the top 10 all-time in program history.
