'Dogs face Pacific on the road for 2017 regular season opener

STOCKTON, Calif. – The Fresno State women's soccer team will open up its 2017 regular season on the road against Pacific on Friday night at 7 p.m. PT on Knoles Field.

Last Time
Fresno State defeated Pacific 2-0 on Sept. 9, 2016 in Fresno, Calif. The Bulldogs held the Tigers scoreless as Amanda Nunes and Julia Glaser scored in the 56th minute and 64th minute of the match, respectively. Fresno State owned the advantage in shots (14-12), shots on goal (6-1) and corner kicks (4-2). Pacific recorded more saves in the contest (4-1).
The last time Fresno State defeated Pacific in Stockton, Calif. was Aug. 29, 1999 when the Bulldogs defeated the Tigers 3-1.
Pacific leads the all-time series against Fresno State 9-4-2.
SCOUTING THE TIGERS
Reviewing last week - Pacific is coming off a 1-0 loss in an exhibition match against Sacramento State on Aug. 11. The Tigers recorded six shots with two on goal against the Hornets. Two Tigers split time in the goal to record five saves against six shots on goal.
Last season - Pacific finished ninth in the West Coast Conference last season, after recording a 1-15-1 (1-8 WCC) record. The Tigers return 12 letterwinners, including their 2016 leading scorer and 2016 All-WCC All-Freshman team selection Samia Adam. Pacific brings back its 2015 season leading scorer Alex Hussar, who is coming off a redshirt season. The Tigers add eight newcomers to round out their 2017 squad.
QUICK LOOK AT THE 'DOGS
Reviewing last week - Fresno State is coming off a 3-1 loss in an exhibition match against Cal Poly on Aug. 13. Fresno State's lone goal was score by senior midfielder Peyton Cline. The goal was scored with 39 minutes left in the match, but the Bulldogs couldn't overcome the two-goal deficit. Goalkeepers Marie Berwinkel-Kottman and Nicole Theroux split time in the box during the contest. They recorded one save each. The Bulldog defense held the Mustangs scoreless for the first thirty minutes and last thirty minutes of the contest.
'Dogs have experience - With only two seniors last season, Fresno State returns 15 letter winners and 10 starters. Bulldogs add six newcomers their 2017 roster.
On the attack, Fresno State returns Myra Delgadillo, Julia Glaser, Peyton Cline and Alyssa Nishikawa. The foursome combined for 68 percent (19-28) of the teams' goals last season and 55 percent of the Bulldogs' assists (12-22). Delgadillo was named to the 2016 All-MW Second-Team. Delgadillo's team-leading nine goals and eight assists ranked second in the MW. Glaser was named to the 2016 MW Newcomer Team. Glaser recorded the second-most goals for the Bulldogs with six, the most for a Bulldog freshman since 2002. Cline was third on the team with four goals and Nishikawa added three assists.
On defense, the Bulldogs return their leading foursome in Sarah Jo Ciapponi, Anna Crawford, Alissa Pham and Olivia Muhrbeck. The 2016 defense allowed the fewest shots in Fresno State history.
In the box, Fresno State returns all three goalkeepers. Marie Berwinkel-Kottman, Nicole Theroux and Alex Best split time in front of the net during the 2016 season.
In 2016, Fresno State tied for seventh in the MW narrowly missing the conference tournament by two points. The Bulldogs 5-5-1 conference record and seventh place finish was the best finish since the 2013.Â
What's next - Fresno State will return home to host Cal State Fullerton in its 2017 home opener at 12 p.m. PT in the Soccer and Lacrosse Stadium.
