'Dogs go on the road for a Thursday night match up

NORTHRIDGE, Calif. – The Fresno State women's soccer team will travel to Southern California to face CSUN in a Thursday night match up on Aug. 31 at 7 p.m. PT.
The Bulldogs take a 1-2 record to Matador Soccer Field.

Last Time – CSUN defeated Fresno State 2-1 on Sept. 4, 2015 in Fresno, Calif. Angie Weiner scored the Bulldogs' lone goal in the 81st minute of the match, but it proved too late in the game to complete a comeback.
The last time Fresno State defeated CSUN in Northridge, Calif. was Aug. 28, 2005 when the Bulldogs defeated the Matadors 2-1.
SCOUTING THE MATADORS
CSUN is 2-0-2 this season, with a 2-0-1 home record.
Marissa Favela leads the Matadors with three goals, one assist, seven points, seven shots on goal and 17 shots. Ariana Tran, Cynthia Sanchez and Kirsten Von Meter have each recorded one goal for the Matadors this season.
CSUN has owned the advantage over its opponents in goals (6-3), shots (67-50) and corner kicks (17-16).
Reviewing last week – CSUN posted a 2-0 record last week, with wins against Houston (2-0) and Utah Valley (2-1 OT).
Goalkeeper Giovani McCaskill recorded the 22nd shutout of her career against Houston.  Cynthia Sanchez netted her first goal of the season in the first half and Marissa Favela connected on a penalty kick for her second goal of the season.
CSUN defeated Utah State Valley in overtime after Marissa Favela scored in the 92nd minute of play to put the Matadors up 2-1. CSUN's first goal of the contest was recorded in the 18th minute by Ariana Tran. Goalkeeper Giovani McCaskill recorded four saves during the match.
In the contest, the Matadors outshot Utah Valley 19-15 and held a 7-5 advantage in shots on goal while the Wolverines posted a 5-4 edge in corner kicks.
Favela was named the Big West Player of the week for games played Aug. 21-27.
Last season – CSUN finished the 2016 season with an 11-5-5 (6-1-1 Big West) record. The Matadors earned their first ever regular season Big West Conference title in team history. CSUN set a new program record for shutouts in a season (15), the team also posted a school-best six-straight shutouts and six-straight shutouts against conference opponents. The Matadors finished the campaign second in the nation in shutout percentage (.714) and third in goals-against-average (.402).Â
CSUN earned the No. 1 seed in the Big West tournament but fell to No. 3 Long Beach in the quarterfinal match, ending its season.

Underclassmen are proving to be contributors – Five underclassmen have worked their way into the starting lineup in Tori Nicolo, Megan Amick, Julia Glaser, Sydni Lunt and Melissa Ellis.
Nicolo, Amick and Ellis made their first collegiate start as Bulldogs in Fresno State's road win against Pacific on Aug. 18.
Ele Avery made her first collegiate appearance in Fresno State's road win against Pacific on Aug. 18. The freshman subbed in both games during the first week of the 2017 regular season. Avery recorded her first collegiate assist on Aug. 18 against Pacific. Avery leads the Bulldogs in assists this season with two. The forward also recorded her first collegiate shot on Aug. 18 against Pacific. Avery made her first collegiate start on Aug. 25 against Sacramento State.

'Dogs have experience – With only two seniors last season, Fresno State returns 15 letter winners and 10 starters. Bulldogs add six newcomers their 2017 roster.
On the attack, Fresno State returns Myra Delgadillo, Julia Glaser, Peyton Cline and Alyssa Nishikawa. The foursome combined for 68 percent (19-28) of the teams' goals last season and 55 percent of the Bulldogs' assists (12-22). Delgadillo was named to the 2016 All-MW Second-Team. Delgadillo's team-leading nine goals and eight assists ranked second in the MW. Glaser was named to the 2016 MW Newcomer Team. Glaser recorded the second-most goals for the Bulldogs with six, the most for a Bulldog freshman since 2002. Cline was third on the team with four goals and Nishikawa added three assists.
On defense, the Bulldogs return their leading foursome in Sarah Jo Ciapponi, Anna Crawford, Alissa Pham and Olivia Muhrbeck. The 2016 defense allowed the fewest shots in Fresno State history.
In the box, Fresno State returns all three goalkeepers. Marie Berwinkel-Kottmann, Nicole Theroux and Alex Best split time in front of the net during the 2016 season.
Last season - In 2016, Fresno State tied for seventh in the MW narrowly missing the conference tournament by two points. The Bulldogs 5-5-1 conference record and seventh place finish was the best finish since the 2013. Â
