Season & career debuts for a trio of Bulldogs
Three Bulldogs will see the mat for the first time on Thursday in Reno as freshman Justin Mejia will make his first career appearance as a Bulldog competing unattached at 125 pounds. Junior Greg Gaxiola will make his first appearance of the 2018-19 season at 157 pounds after finishing last season with a 13-18 overall record. Finally, junior Josh Hokit will make his season debut after recently finishing the Fresno State football season last Saturday helping the Bulldogs defeat Arizona State, 31-20 in the Las Vegas Bowl.
Hokit returns to the mat after finishing football season
For a second straight season, Hokit will make the quick transition from the gridiron to the mat as last year he needed only 11 days from helping the Bulldog football team win the 2017 Hawai'i Bowl on Christmas Eve to pinning his Cal Poly opponent in a dual at the Save Mart Center on Jan. 4.
This time around, the time in between will be cut in half as it will be only five days as Hokit was in Las Vegas on Saturday for the 'Dogs bowl game and quickly has turned his focus to the mat.
Hokit, who went 9-8 last season at 197 pounds and finished fifth at the Big 12 Championships, will look to return to form quickly with his sights set on qualifying for the 2019 NCAA Championships in Pittsburgh in March.
Four 'Dogs back competing at the Reno Tournament of Champions
Four Bulldogs expected to wrestle on Thursday are returning after appearing in the tournament last season. Gaxiola & Solis each went 1-2 at 157 and 184 pounds, respectively while Trinh competed at 125 pounds unattached going 3-2 with a fall and two decisions. Wright went 2-2 competing unattached at 157 pounds notching a pair of major decisions.
Up next
The full team wil be back in action on Dec. 29-30 at the 2018 Ken Kraft Midlands Championships hosted by Northwestern at the Sears Centre in Hoffman Estates, Ill.Â
