'Dogs host Lobos in MW home opener

FRESNO, Calif. – The Fresno State men's tennis team will host New Mexico in its Mountain West opener on Sunday, April 1 at 11 a.m. PT in the Spalding G. Wathen Tennis Center.

The Bulldogs are 12-10 (1-0 MW), 8-0 at home this season.

Fresno State has four Bulldogs that have 10 or more dual wins in Zdenek Derkas (10-5), Cem Erturk (14-5), Henrique Osorio (11-2) and Cagatay Soke (12-6). Derkas has logged the only win over a ranked opponent for the Bulldogs, with a straight set win over #62 Ferran Calvo of Oklahoma. In doubles, Soke and Xander Veys have a team-best 7-5 doubles dual record. The duo plays at the No. 2 position for the Bulldogs.

Last week – Fresno State chalked a 1-2 week, with a 7-0 win over Oklahoma Baptist. The Bulldogs had a 4-3 loss to No. 16 Oklahoma and a 4-2 loss to No. 18 Oklahoma State.

2018 Bulldogs – With the departure of last season's lone senior, Euan McIntosh, the Bulldogs return eight players including Mantas Bugailiskis, Zdenek Derkas, Bailey Gong, Youssef Hassan, Jeremy Moser, Henrique Osorio, Patrik Pechand Xander Veys.

Bugailiskis lead the Bulldogs in 2017 with a team-best 21-6 singles record, 6-1 conference singles record and was named the team's 2017 MVP. Fresno State returns the 2017 Mountain West Freshman of the Year in Zdenek Derkas, who finished the 2017 season with a perfect 3-0 record in conference play. The Bulldogs also return their No. 1 singles player in Veys. He finished the season 16-9 singles record at the No. 1 spot, was selected to the 2017 All-Mountain West Singles Team and the tteam's 2017 Most Improved Player.

2017 Review-- Fresno State finished the 2017 season with an 18-13 (5-2 MW) record. The Bulldogs made a MW Tournament run as the No. 2 seed before falling in the semifinals to UNLV 4-3.
