The Diamond 'Dogs dropped game two of their three-game weekend series to San Jose State, 15-7 on Saturday night at Bob Bennett Stadium. Prior to Sunday's game, Fresno State Athletics will honor the 10-year anniversary of the 2008 Wonderdogs run to the National Championship in Omaha. There will be pre-game autograph session with members of the 2008 team from 12-12:30 p.m. before an on-field ceremony starting at 12:45 p.m. hosted by the Voice of the Bulldogs Paul Loeffler.
Fresno State (21-13, 8-9 MW), who lost for only the second time over its last nine games, continued its outstanding production from the plate as five Bulldogs notched multi-hit games. Junior center fielder Zach Ashford led the way matching his career-high going 3-for-5 with a run scored and an RBI. JT Arruda, Torin Goldstein, Nolan Dempsey and Korby Batesole all had two hits apiece while Jeremiah Burks smashed his sixth home run of the season.
On the mound, junior right-hander Edgar Gonzalez struggled as he was limited to a season-low four innings while allowing a career-high eight earned runs and matched his career-high with 11 hits allowed. He did notch four strikeouts and now sits at 192 in his career as he is eight shy of reaching 200.
Seven more Bulldog relievers came on as Isaiah Davis, Chad Wilson, Oscar Carvajal and Ryan Sullivan all tossed an inning. Tiegen Jones, Adam Medrano & JJ Santa Cruz also saw action.
How It Happened
For a second straight game, the Spartans got on the scoreboard first putting up four runs in the top of the first before adding a pair of runs in the second inning scoring on an RBI double down the left field line by first baseman Shane Timmons to score shortstop Aaron Pleschner and right fielder Chris Williams flied out to center field to drive in left fielder Brett Bautista.
The Bulldogs broke up San Jose State starting pitcher Andrew Mitchel's shutout bid in the third as Batesole got on base with a hit by pitch which was followed by a single to left field by Nate Thimjon. After a wild pitch moved the pair of 'Dogs up a base, Burks launched a three-run home to left field to cut the Spartans' lead to 6-3 (watch).
San Jose State continued to get to Gonzalez in the top of the fourth as center fielder Kellen Strahm found his way on base with a seeing-eye single through the left side before Timmons cranked his fourth home run of the season to left-center putting the Spartans up 8-3.
Carter Bins laced an RBI single to left field to drive in Ashford to cut the Spartans lead to 8-4 (watch) in the fifth as the 'Dogs threatened for more runs. Designated hitter Zach Presno drew a walk to load the bases bringing up Goldstein who represented the tying run, but the hot-hitting redshirt senior was unable to come through as he was retired on strikes.
The Spartans added five runs in the top of the seventh as Pleschner drove in a run and Timmons smacked his second home run of the night, this time a grand slam to left-center, to give San Jose State a 13-4 lead.
The Bulldogs added three runs late putting up two in the eighth on RBI singles by Miles Tomczak and Ashford and added one more in the ninth on a single by Goldstein who notched his sixth consecutive multi-hit game.
Quotes
Head Coach Mike Batesole
On tonight's game....
"Both teams were fantastic on defense tonight and the difference was they had a few more of their hits fall than we did. That is why you play three games and get back after it tomorrow and win the series."
On Torin Goldstein recording his sixth consecutive multi-hit game....
"I am just standing there and letting it ride and stay out of his way and let it ride. I want to let his brain stay clear and let him hit it."
On getting ready for Sunday...
"We will have Davis Moore ready to go and our defense locked in behind him and when we have those two things lined up we set ourselves up for a pretty good day."
