Fresno State edged by No. 50 Utah State, 4-2

LOGAN, Utah – The Fresno State men's tennis team suffered its first Mountain West loss in a close 4-2 match against No. 50 Utah State, Sunday afternoon.

Fresno State falls to 14-11 (3-1 MW).

Doubles – Utah State chalked the doubles point.

Cem Erturk and Mantas Bugailiskis their opponents at the No. 1 position, 6-2. The Aggies claimed the win at the No. 3 position when Youssef Hassan and Zdenek Derkas fell 6-3. The point was clinched at the No. 2 position, Xander Veys and Cagatay Soke fell in a tiebreaker 7-6 (4).

Singles – Erturk tied the match 1-1 when he defeated Valdemar Holm at the No. 4 position in straight sets (6-1, 6-4).

The Aggies retook the lead when Veys was bested at the No. 1 position (6-4, 7-5), by Jamie Barajas. Utah State extended its lead to 2-1 when Sergiu Bucur defeated Bugailiskis at the No. 2 position in three sets (6-1, 3-6, 7-5).

Derkas made it a 3-2 match, defeating Samuel Serrano in a hard-fought three-set match at the No. 3 position (6-2, 5-7, 6-1).

Utah State clinched the match at the No. 5 position when Jeremy Moser was bested by Felipe Acosta in two sets (7-6, 6-0).

The match at the No. 6 position was left unfinished.

What's next – Fresno State will return home to host conference foe UNLV on Thursday, April 12 at 5 p.m. PT. Admission to all Fresno State men's tennis games are free of charge.
