'Dogs fall in home opener to Rutgers, 23-13

FRESNO, Calif. - Despite picking up four individual wins, the Fresno State Wrestling team fell to Rutgers, 23-13 on Friday evening in its home opener at the Save Mart Center.
Fresno State (0-4) got a major decision from redshirt junior Greg Gaxiola at 149 pounds and decisions from redshirt junior DJ Lloren at 141 pounds, redshirt freshman Adam Kemp at 165 pounds and redshirt sophomore Jackson Hemauer at 174 pounds.
Rutgers (4-0) countered with six victories, including three by bonus points, as the Scarlet Knights used wins in the final two matches to seal a 10-point win over the Bulldogs.
How It Happened
With the dual getting started at heavyweight, Bulldog sophomore Randy Gonzlaez battled No. 19 Christian Colucci tough before falling 8-0.
With Rutgers picking up two more wins at 125 and 133 pounds, by a fall and a major decision, respectively, the visitors took a 14-0 lead after three matches. The 'Dogs started to battle back with wins back-to-back wins by Lloren and Gaxiola heading into the intermission. A transfer from Utah Valley, Lloren broke a 2-2 tie in the third period with an escape and added a 1:15 of riding time for a 4-2 win over No. 22 JoJo Aragona.
Gaxiola followed with the most Bulldogs' most dominant performance of the dual jumping out to a 6-0 lead in the first period on a takedown and a four-point near fall and used the same combination in the second period to build a 13-4 lead after two periods and closed out the match with an escape and point for riding time for a 15-4 win over No. 30 Gerard Angelo.
After redshirt sophomore Jacob Wright fell 7-4 at 157 pounds, the 'Dogs kept the winning going at 165 and 174 pounds with wins by Kemp and Hemauer. Kemp jumped ahead 4-3 in the second period with a takedown and used 1:25 of riding time to secure a narrow 5-4 win over Brett Donner. Hemauer followed suit with a 5-0 win over redshirt senior Willie Scott using a takedown, reversal and a point for riding time to cut the Rutgers' lead in the dual to 17-13.
Unfortunately for the 'Dogs, they fell in the final two matches as nationally-ranked Rutgers wrestlers knocked off redshirt senior Dominic Kincaid at 184 pounds and Ryan Reyes at 197 pounds.

" I knew it was going to be a tough match. I know the coaches there and they know what they are doing. There was not going to be any easy points given. Overall, I thought we had good fight, but we cannot afford to give up bonus points. We got to get better, but we will learn from this."
