FRESNO, Calif. – With up-and-down games from the field to start her career, Haley Cavinder put on a shooting display from deep on Sunday afternoon that helped Fresno State to an 83-66 win Northern Arizona at the Save Mart Center. The 5-foot-6 guard registered a program freshman record 29 points as she knocked down 7-of-11 from beyond the arc.
Despite the Lumberjacks shooting nearly six percent better than the Bulldogs from the field, it was Fresno State's shooting from 3 that saw the 'Dogs earn a plus-33 point advantage. Fresno State also turned 19 turnovers into 27 points.
Along with Cavinder's 29 points and eight rebounds, Hanna Cavinder poured in 18 to go with three assists. Maddi Utti added 11 points on 5-of-11 shooting and Aly Gamez registered nine points and a season-high seven assists. Jordanna Porter chipped in eight points (2-of-2 from 3) and nine rebounds off of the bench to round out the Bulldogs' balanced effort.
How It Happened
Despite Fresno State opening up the game with a 3-pointer from Hanna, the Bulldogs never led in the first quarter outside of the first 93 seconds. The sense of a momentum shift came just before the end of the quarter as Haley drilled a 3-pointer to tie the game at 19-19. The freshman continued to heat up in the second, pushing her total to 12 with nine in the frame. Seven of those nine came during a 16-1 run during the first three-plus minutes of the period as the 'Dogs forced four early steals, turning them into easy points to take a 35-20 lead with 6:42 on the clock. Fresno State ended the half on an 8-1 spurt that that gave the 'Dogs a resounding 44-27 lead through 20 minutes.
Behind three triples from Haley early in the third, Fresno State's advantage grew to 27 just over four minutes into the third period. Despite their deficit, the Lumberjacks found their run, closing the quarter with a 15-6 stretch. The Bulldogs' 18-point lead was then cut to 13 with 7:41 on the clock in fourth, but again it was Haley who dropped in her sixth trey on the day to halt NAU's momentum and make it 69-55 game. Buckets on back-to-back possessions from the visitors made it a 14-point game, but the 'Dogs hit a 7-0 spurt with five coming from Haley to put the game out of reach at 78-59 with 4:41 remaining.

On her team's defense pressure…
"I really thought our guard line did a good job of pressuring. We had so many points in transition, it got us a little gap and got us up 10, and we continued to push it up."
On forcing turnovers…
"We knew that they turn the ball over a little bit so that was our focus, to get them to turn the ball over. When we press well, we're pretty good."
On Haley Cavinder's performance…
"She played exceptional tonight, and especially at times she's bringing the ball down and then she's able to spot up and be ready to shoot the ball. I think she's had a focus and felt it and continued. She really was there to help our team and help us get that big lead."
Freshman guard Haley Cavinder
On the 3-point shot…
"The three was finally falling for our whole team honestly. We came in struggling with our three, but we all understood that we are a really good 3-point shooting team. And then once JP (Jordanna Porter) came in and started hitting 3s and then I was feeling it, we just feed off each other. It was going today."
On her offensive mentality…
"Just take what the defense gives me and what our team needs. Hitting that shot, but also doing that extra pass for a person like JP coming in."
On the on-court connection with her twin sister…
"I think we understand that one person is going to have a big game, one person is not. So we definitely are going to be looking for each other's strengths. If I'm having a good game, Hanna is going to try to find me and vice versa."
