Bulldog Bones
Despite a season-high 14 turnovers at Portland on Nov. 17, Fresno State has committed just 15 during the past two games, which includes a season-low six against BYU on Nov. 21. The Bulldogs rank second in the NCAA in fewest turnovers per game, committing 10.0 per game.Â
- With three guards who can run the point, the 'Dogs expect to be below the 14.3 turnovers that they averaged a season ago.
- Ranking only sixth in the league in assists, the Bulldogs' low turnover frequency still has them leading the MW and ranking No. 24 in the NCAA with a 1.33 assist-turnover ratio.
Let it fly
With a smaller lineup, it's no wonder that Fresno State has opted to the let the shots fly from deep this year. The struggle though is that they haven't dropped in at a higher enough rate. The hope though is that last Sunday's game versus Northern Arizona is a sign of things to come as the 'Dogs shot 51.9 percent (14-of-27) from 3 against the Lumberjacks. Fresno State hadn't shot above 40 percent in any of its previous five games.
- The Bulldogs have taken the 25-most attempts in the nation (154) making the 38th-most (48). Making just 8.0 per game (46th), Fresno State is shooting 31.2 percent (179th).
- Fresno State has shot below 22 percent from 3 in its two losses.
Perimeter fence
While the Bulldogs have struggled early in the year to hit their perimeter shots, they haven't allowed opponents to fare any better. Fresno State has held teams to the 15th-lowest 3-point percentage in the NCAA as opponents have shot just 22.1 percent from deep.
- The Bulldogs have held three of its six opponents to 20 percent or lower from 3.
- Fresno State held Montana to 0-of-12 from beyond the arc, the Bulldogs' first opponent to not make a 3-pointer in a game since Hawai'i went 0-of-9 on Jan. 28, 2012.
On the road again
Splitting its first six games between home and the road, Fresno State will go back on the road for the next three games, playing two at the LMU Thanksgiving before opening the Mountain West season at UNLV. Fresno State will play six of its first nine games this season away from home.
- The six games is the most away from home for the Bulldogs during the first nine games of a season since the Bulldogs played seven of the first nine games outside of Fresno to start the 2009-10 season.
No rest for the weary
Following last Sunday's game versus Northern Arizona, the Bulldogs will need to pace themselves during their four off days as there will be little time off during the upcoming week. With games against Yale and Georgetown on back-to-back days (Friday/Saturday), Fresno State will get to days off, with one of those will being a travel day, before opening conference play Tuesday at UNLV.
Explosive trio
In four of Fresno State's six games, the trio of Maddi Utti, Hanna Cavinder and Haley Cavinder has led the Bulldogs in scoring.
- The trio has twice accounted for at least 84 percent of the team's scoring.
- Fresno State is 3-1 when the trio are the team's top three scorers.
- The Bulldogs are the only team in the Mountain West with three players ranking in in the top 10 in scoring.
- All three have two 20-point games this season, the only team in the Mountain West with three players who have posted multiple 20-point performances.
Â
Sharpshooters
While Fresno State's starters have done the bulk of the scoring, Jordanna Porter and Kendyll Kinzer have been sparks off of the bench with their efficiency from 3. The two have combined to shoot 54.2 percent from beyond the arc this season.
- With a quick and efficient stroke from 3, Porter is leading the team at 57.1 percent (8-of-14).
Â
H&H
Unlike the New York City staple, Fresno State's version of H&H haven't been serving up bagels to start their careers as twins Haley and Hanna Cavinder have combined to average 32.8 points per game this season. The combined average is the highest for a set of twins this year in Division I (26 sets).Â
- Only one other set of freshman twins is averaging north of 20 points together, LaSalle's Amy and Claire Jacobs who are at 20.0 points per game.
- North Alabama's Emma and Ivy Wallen are 5.2 points behind the Cavinder's average.
- The two rank first and second on the team in scoring.
- The two have combined for 40 or more points in half of the Bulldogs' games. Fresno State is 3-0 in those games, including a season-high 45 against Northern Arizona.
Â
Two of the nation's most productive freshmen
Scoring 16.5 points per game, Haley ranks fifth among freshmen in the NCAA while Hanna ranks two spots behind at 16.3. While their scoring is similar as they rank as two of the top freshmen in country, how Haley and Hanna Cavinder have gotten to their totals has been different.Â
- Haley has attempted the sixth-most 3-pointers by a freshman (47) while making the third-most (17). The 51 points is just over half of her total points (99).
- Hanna has been much more of a driver, getting to the free-throw line for the fifth-most attempts among freshmen (33), making the third-most (27).
