LOS ANGELES – Trailing by six with 10 minutes to play, Fresno State was outscored by 34-20 in the fourth quarter, falling 87-67 to Yale on Friday afternoon at Gersten Pavilion. The Bulldogs from the East Coast sank 14 of their final 17 shots of the game to create the separation.
Fresno State had a season-high 18 turnovers which led to a rare point advantage in the category for its opponents (14-12). Yale controlled the interior, scoring 60 points in the paint and totaled 19 second-chance points.
Yale had four players score in double figures, including a game-high 26 points and 17 rebounds from 6-foot-5 post Camilla Emsbo. Fresno State on the other hand saw just to two players in double figures, led by Hanna Cavinder's 20 points and Maddi Utti's 15-point, 10-rebound double-double.
How It Happened
The first quarter saw each team hitting quick bursts. Utti and Cavinder combined for Fresno State's first six points but Yale answered back with the next eight to take a 10-6 advantage midway through the period. Aly Gamez got going and hit back-to-back buckets and Utti added another late in the quarter to give the 'Dogs a two-point lead, but a layup by Emsbo tied the game at 16-16 after one.
Both teams traded 3's to open up the second but Fresno State went cold, missing their next five shots following Cavinder's trey. Yale went on an 11-0 run during that span, capitalizing on miscues by the 'Dogs. Fresno State was unable to put a run together in the period and Yale added a layup as time expired to take a 39-26 lead into the half.
Back-to-back 3-pointers to open the third layup from Cavinder brought Fresno State within five 93 seconds into the third. With the 'Dogs seizing momentum through pressure defense, rattling the opposition, they would get the deficit down to three with under four minutes to play on a pair of and-ones from Cavinder and Gamez. A 3-pointer on the wing from Jordanna Porter then brought Fresno State with two at 49-47 with 2:14 on the clock. Yale scored the final four points of the period to extend its lead back to six.
Yale missed its first attempt of the fourth quarter and proceeded connect on seven of their next eight shots during a 15-1 run to take a 70-51 lead with 5:22 remaining in the game. Fresno State scored six of the next nine points in the game but Yale followed with seven unanswered to build it lead largest lead of the game at 23.
