The Diamond 'Dogs split a doubleheader on Monday against Utah Valley falling 4-3 in game one before winning game two, 8-3 to secure the series win.
FRESNO, Calif. - After being limited by rainy weather to one game over three days to open up the season, the Diamond 'Dogs and Utah Valley completed their season-opening series on Monday afternoon with a doubleheader split as the Wolverines took game one, 4-3 and the Bulldogs won game two, 8-3.
Fresno State (2-1) combined for 16 hits offensively in the pair of games getting seven in game one and nine in game two. The 'Dogs hit their first two home runs of the season in game two as both first baseman Zach Presno and second baseman Nolan Dempsey each went yard. Four Bulldogs added a double apiece with right fielder Miles Tomczak and third baseman McCarthy Tatum getting doubles in game one and center fielder Zach Ashford and catcher Carter Bins adding them in game two.
On the pitching side, seven 'Dogs saw action as redshirt freshman reliever Kevin Larson, who made his Fresno State debut in game one, picked up the win in game two. Larson joined forces with Oscar Carvajal, Jaime Arias, Tiegen Jones and Tatum to throw 7.2 innings in relief over the two games only allowing four hits and one earned runs whole striking out eight and walking one.
How It Happened: Game One
After leading from start to finish in Saturday's season opening win, the 'Dogs trailed for the first time all season to start game one as UVU right fielder Alexander Marco put the Wolverines ahead 2-0 early with a two-out, two-run home run to left field in the top of the second off Bulldog lefty Nikoh Mitchell.
With the Wolverines threatening for more runs, Mitchell was able to strand the bases full of Wolverines in the top of the third after UVU loaded them with one out as the sophomore southpaw got catcher Drew Sims to fly out to right field and then fanned designated hitter Mick Madsen (watch).
The 'Dogs got the scoring started in the bottom of third with a two-out rally scoring three runs as Bins drove in a pair with a single to left field driving in Tomczak and Presno (watch) to knot the game at 2-2. After Bins moved to second on a passed ball, shortstop JT Arruda singled through the right side to bring around Bins to put the Bulldogs in the lead, 3-2 (watch).
Fresno State looked to extend its lead with a double by Tatum to left-center that advanced Arruda to third, and after a walk by designated hitter Emilio Nogales loaded the bases, Dempsey flew out in foul ground to UVU's Kade Paulson at first base to end the threat.
The Wolverines tied the game at 3-3 in the top of the fifth with an RBI single through the left side by Madsen. UVU tried again to take back the lead loading the bases, but Tatum made a spectacular double play in the field (watch) to halt any more potential runs.
With the game entering the ninth inning deadlocked at 3-3, Utah Valley secured the game-winning run with a two-out solo home run by Sims in the top of the ninth giving the Wolverines a 4-3 lead. Relief pitcher Jesse Schmit came in to record the save retiring the 'Dogs in order.
How It Happened: Game Two
The 'Dogs got the scoring started in game one as Presno led off the bottom of the third with his first home run of the season to right-center giving the 'Dogs a early 1-0 lead (watch).
The Bulldogs added a pair of runs in the fourth getting a leadoff double by Bins that found its way between the Wolverine defenders and Arruda followed with an RBI single through the right side that drove in Bins from second (watch).
With Bulldog starting pitcher Davis Moore working a scoreless first five innings and sitting on a 3-0 lead, the Wolverines finally got to the junior right-hander in the sixth innings for three runs to tie the game.
The Wolverines used a two-out double down the left field line by left fielder Jake Berry to score one and after a wild pitch scored Sims, UVU tied it up with a single through the right side by Marco.
The 'Dogs responded in the bottom of the seventh scoring the eventual game-winning run with a one-out single by Presno that found its way through the left side of the infield and brought in pinch-runner Jeff Jamison from third base (watch).
The Bulldogs added four insurance runs in the bottom of the eighth with two outs as Ashford was able to steal home after UVU catcher Drew Sims threw down to second base (watch) and Tatum scored on a throwing error by the UVU shortstop. Holding on to a 6-3 lead, Dempsey threw one final knockout punch with a two-run home run to left-center (watch) to complete the scoring for the game.

On winning the series over Utah Valley.....
"Defensively, we were amazing all weekend and offensively it started to come in the third game and it generally take a little bit to get into a rhythm and our older guys, seniors were fantastic. McCarthy Tatum was terrific all weekend, playing great defense, got a key bunt down today and got some big hits and then went in and threw an inning. You win two out of three every weekend and good things will happen."
On relief pitchers only giving up one earned run over 7.2 innings in the two games.....
"I thought they were outstanding and they came in and threw strikes and challenged hitters. That is the best way to pitch and if you are pumping strikes in there, keep on going."
On looking forward to the Tony Gwynn Legacy next weekend.....
"I am really excited to get out there and see how we handle those tough teams. All those wins will be special."
