The Bulldogs opened up the 2019 Tony Gwynn Legacy Tournament on Friday afternoon with a dominant 11-3 win over Kansas State at Fowler Park on the campus of the University of San Diego.
Fresno State (3-1) totaled a season-high 13 hits in the contest led by sophomore first baseman Zach Presno who matched his career-high with three hits, including hitting his second home run of the season and drove in a career-best four RBIs.
Nolan Dempsey, McCarthy Tatum and Nate Thimjon, who got his first start of the season, all tallied two hits apiece as the 'Dogs scored a run in six of the first seven innings of the game.
On the pitching side, junior right-hander Ryan Jensen improved to 2-0 on the season with a stellar effort tossing six innings while only holding Kansas State (2-4) to four hits, one earned run, two walks and struck out four. Tiegen Jones, Ryan Sullivan, Robbie Peters and Kyle Pruhsmeier combined to throw the final three innings as both Peters and Pruhsmeier worked an inning while each striking out a pair as both made their Bulldog debuts on the mound.
How It Happened
The Bulldogs struck first in the top of the second with a pair of runs as Presno drove in the 'Dogs first run with an RBI single to left-center scoring Tatum from third base, who led off the frame with a single through the left side. Right fielder Miles Tomczak followed Presno with an RBI groundout back to Kansas State starting pitcher Tyler Eckberg that drove home Dempsey from third.
The 'Dogs erupted for its highest single-inning so far this season in the top of the third plating five runs to take a commanding 7-0 lead. Tatum smacked a one-out double to center field to bring in both Zach Ashford and Carter Bins. Dempsey made it 5-0 with a single through the left side to drive in Tatum who scooted all the way around the bases from second. With Dempsey advancing to second on the Wildcats' throw home, Presno followed drilling a home run deep to right-center.
Fresno State added one run apiece in the fourth, fifth, sixth and seventh innings. Thimjon scored on a wild pitch in the fourth and RBI singles by Presno in the fifth and JT Arruda in the sixth made it 10-0 before the Wildcats finally broke up the shutout bid in the bottom of the frame with a single by Cameron Thompson.
A bases-loaded walk to Ashford in the seventh scored Presno from third to give the 'Dogs their 11th and final run as the scoring concluded with a two-run home run by freshman Jeffrey Boggess off Pruhsmeier in the ninth.
Quotes
Head Coach Mike Batesole
On Ryan Jensen's performance today against Kansas State......
"He had outstanding fastball command. A lot of confidence and if can get going, he will have a big year."
On playing 16 position players and five pitchers in the game.....
"It is great to have them come in the game and have some success. It goes a long ways for a ball club and when it is not just nine guys, but 13, 14 and pitchers are doing there piece, that is great."
On moving onto Saturday versus No. 25 Cal State Fullerton....
"Same thing we saw today, just want to keep it going tomorrow."
